As much as republicans hate paying taxes, refuse to pay certain taxes, and work their way around getting out of taxes. We now have a month's worth of GOP talking points,it's time to start exposing soome of the real cheats. I caught the info on MSNBC a few minutes ago (at work can't supply a link)

9. What we are seeing, is the fact, that, once people reach a level of "success",
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 03:01 PM by SoCalDem
they rely too heavily on "creative" bookkeeping and deft accountants, who push the envelope.

Most of the time, their standing in the community protects them from any real recourse...UNTIL they need to be vetted for a larger job sometime in the future..

The thing that bothers me, is that they all KNOW they "skimped" when paying their taxes, or got a bit "too creative", but they felt the risk was worth it..

Only AFTER they are mentioned for a higher position, are they suddenly interested in "paying their back taxes"..

15. And all this really means is that Bush nominees never had their taxes looked into very carefully.
I'd love to have a look at the tax records of any five Bush-era appointees, randomly chosen. All of this is a function of who's doing the vetting. Obama's high standards comprise a crucible that Republicans never had to face.

45. That wasn't my contention and, yes, cheating on taxes, is relevant...
...at this point, and at every point--regardless of who's doing it. My point, since you missed it, is that given Obama's much higher standards than those of the Bush administration, we shouldn't be surprised by what's being exposed. In this case, it just happens to be relative to Democrats.

administration since day one. There is no other way to explain this. The neo-cons are terrified of Obama and they will do ANYthing they can do marginalize his successes.

I don't have any doubt that Cheney and his off-the-wall comments about future attacks will become a self-fulfilling prophecy if Obama does too well in the neo-con's eyes. There is too much at stake for the future of their party to let Obama succeed.

The capstone on all of this is that all through the campaign Obama et al ran an incredibly air-tight ship and were virtually impervious to information leaks of any kind. Too many leaks have sprung in the recent weeks to just brush off as "normal effects of greater exposure." Someone / some people are working to bring this administration down before it even gets up to speed.

23. Any sufficiently complex tax return
Will inevitably have something that could raise scrutiny, no matter how honest or scrupulous the individual.

The tax code is complex enough that anyone who claims any deductions or has any income from a business can be nailed to the wall, if enough effort is applied.

with the same scrutiny as the ones being vetted. Both State and Federal, would be interesting to see the end numbers as to party affiliation. I suspect we would be shorter on leadership than we currently are.

29. Of course, it's absolutely nothing. But the Rethugs will screech like harpies about it.
It's only $6,400 from some long-forgotten business venture. It's not her, it's her husband, so Solis herself is clean.

But the Rethugs will start howling, it'll be all over Limbaugh and Hannity, and another good, decent person will find her nomination torpedoed thanks to a witchhunt.

is that it does not mater what letter follows the name of the congress person, they ALL believe the rules don't apply to them. I am mad as hell about all these tax "oversights" by the people who determine how much the rest of us pay in taxes. When statements are made in a campaign to the effect that paying higher taxes is the responsibility, which it is, of the most privileged among us then you better make damn sure your own house is in order. This entire thing just represents arrogance to the highest degree in my eyes

46. For me Geitner was the most serious since he is going to run Treasury.
How ludicrous is it to have a Treasury Secretary who doesn't pay his taxes, whatever his excuse! The irony is that he is the one who got a pass; I guess because he was the first and as the numbers of offenders rose the penalties for noncompliance accrued. It has gotten downright embarrassing. Where were the vetters? I hope this does not kill Solis; she would be supreme!!
