Dan Rather to MSNBC?
Possibly, if anything is to be taken away from KO's signoff and chat with Rachel.

Rather at 10pm? Olbermann Floats the Idea
A tipster noted the toss last night between Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow, in which Olbermann asked: "Dan Rather tonight? Want to ask him if he's doing anything weeknights at 10?" Maddow replied, "I will, thank you for suggesting that, Keith."

1. if true, MSNBC needs to do what NGO did with Ted Koppel
National Geographic Channel gave Ted Koppel an hour block and said he could do anything he wanted, so he went around and did hour long specials highlighting third world stories.

7. Dan needs to demand MSNBC go High Def first
The man has been so clearly displayed at his current job on HDNet, that the standard definition blur at MSNBC would be a step backwards.

15. Dan should also demand MSNBC drop all the prison & predator BS programming
I can't imagine a reason they run those shows so often ... they could run repeats of KO and RM, even Hardball or 1600, and keep me from switching the channel in disgust.

In fact, I think HD rather looks like someone's home movie. Color me NOT impressed with it.

8. I wish
But I think Dan's really entrenched at HDNET. Of course, I'd love to be wrong.

I would miss the Keith repeat. But seeing Dan on there...EXPECIALLY if he had free rein, so he could continue the Bu$h awol story, or cover the Don Seigelman story..

While I'm thinking about it..why doesn't MSNBC cover the Sibel Edmonds story??

16. Cenk would be great, no question.
WHEN will the TV media wake up to the fact that TYT would be awesome programming? What will it take?

Sorry if I'm off the Dan Rather topic.

While I'm at it: Thom Hartmann, Laura Flanders, Amy Goodman

28. Amen. He was brilliant as a pundit on CNN-HNN (like when he was defending Gen. Wes Clark)
And he was great when he hosted Maddow and Michael Moore in Meet The Bloggers. He's shown he can hang with the elite progressives, and his style and delivery are unique.

Besides, a Turkish American would add some much needed diversity. The US is all about immigrants, right?

11. That would be super, but too good to be true.
Rather's voice is comforting. I swear, he could sit there and lie to me for an hour and I'd never catch on. I thoroughly enjoyed him on Rachel's show, last night.

13. HA! It'd serve traitor Brokaw right!
I used to really admire him but after his behavior
(complaints about Olbermann and Tweety) during this
election cycle -- and his kid glove treatment of
McLame during the debate he moderated -- has changed
my opinion of him (for the worse). I'd LOVE it if
MSNBC gave Rather a gig, including editorial control.

22. That's okay. I'll take your place.
Dan Rather was robbed. The vast "right"wing conspiracy had it in for him for years. They hated him for being disrespectful to THEIR nixon, and then again to george the first. He deserves another showcase.

That would be sweet! MSNBC could build itself into the Anti-Pox. The Antidote to Pox Noise. In a most muscular manner. That would be a troika of high-octane, red-meat-for-liberals shows, and I for one have been eating rabbit food for FAR too long.

26. I see your point, but
in fear of sounding ageist, I'm ready for something new, as they've done with KO and Rachel.

I think it's horrible what they did to him after the 60 minutes story. IMO, I think they set him up deliberately.

Who know, maybe the show will be good? But if it's just a lot of Texas Rather-isms, it's just won't be for me.

I'll reserve the right to change my mind once I see a few shows if he does get it.

32. You make some good points there. It IS important, vitally important, to recruit
Edited on Sat Jan-31-09 03:30 AM by calimary
and nurture new power people. And I'm as sick-to-death of Texas-isms as I could ever have imagined being.

And they DID set him up deliberately. He was fouled on a technicality. And in that climate back then, early 2004, bush still swaggering around as some would-be master of the universe because the Iraq War was still being pumped like crazy by the dominant GOP-CONservative media monopoly and sufficient numbers of Americans still clung to the belief that the emperor dressed well all the time. People didn't start waking up to Just How Bad bush was at "his" job until late August 2005 when Hurricane Katrina blew his invincibility facade away - in the eyes of the media, too. We're visually-oriented consumers for the most part, I guess. But by then, Gunga Dan was gone.

He was fouled on a technicality. It's not a rock-solid truism that the electric typewriters of the time those memos were written made certain keys type certain things. I've seen all kinds of reports and comments and blogs on all sides of this, with all manner of ownership of IBM-everything from every date. OY. What was surprisingly ignored, at least to me, was the follow-up "60 Minutes" report that also featured the secretary who typed up the original memos. She said on camera that she may not have typed up those exact papers she was being shown during her interview, but that she remembered the contents as being something she HAD typed up.

And NOBODY followed up on that. NOBODY. That slid completely under the radar. The hew and cry only went on about what type face was used and other minutae that continued not to prove or disprove anything. He dared to make their leaders (nixon, bush-1, and bush-2) look bad and that just simply is not done. (File that one in the "yeah, SUUUUUUUURE" file.)

Yeah he's an elder, been-there-done-that, etc. But perhaps we need a few of our elders on the air. We don't have many. Heaven knows Tom Brokaw is virtually incoherent. Ted Koppel's not around much, Bill Moyers is very occasional on PBS, and who else is there? Tim Russert just died and he wasn't exactly an eminence grise. There is a certain age window I've noticed which on-air talent inhabit. We don't have many worthy voices above that window.

I dunno.

But I do know I'd just love to see Dan Rather vindicated.

Besides, anything that makes the freeper-CONjobbers gnash their teeth is a good thing.
