There's one question that has never been asked of Barack Obama
Barack Obama is about my age and is about as geeky as I am, so I have one burning question.

Has Barack Obama ever played D&D?

I know he collects comics, so it would be hard to believe he's never been exposed to D&D. In fact, I'd say it's highly likely that somebody somewhere has rolled dice with Barack Obama.

3. Speaking of 4E is BLASPHEMY!
There is only ONE D&D. It came in a little white box, had three 8.5"X5.5" booklets and some sheets with tables on them.

Meh, I like 2E. 3E was okay as was 3.5, but I despise 4E. It's more like World of Dungeons and Dragonscraft.

7. Never had the little white box - I had the 2nd edition of 1st edition.
from 1980. 9x12 red box w/three booklets and 1 set of dice. Same rules, different look. 4 classes, MU, cleric, fighter and elf.

I would personally hope that Obama has been a little too busy to even be aware of 4E.

8. He may have heard about it
He collects comics, remember?

I doubt he knows anything about how the gnome is now gone and Dragonborn are a core race, though.

where his chaotic-neutral pixie was killed by a single blow from a goblin.

5. Is it that old?
I thought D&D (which I have never played btw) came about in my generation (and I'm 12 years younger.)

6. D&D was first published in 1974, my friend!
Edited on Wed Jan-21-09 03:27 PM by WeDidIt
Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson first put together the original rules in 1974 publi9shed by Tactical Studies Rules.

1977 saw the publication of a Basic Edition and the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Moster Manual, 1978 saw the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook with the Dungeon MAster's Guide published in 1979.

AD&D entered Second Edition in 1989.

Third Edition was published in 2000 with a revised edition known as 3.5 published in 2003.

Last Year saw Dungeons and Dragons enter its Fourth Edition.

9. D&D is another level of geek
He might me the geekiest president so far, but I really don't think he's on that level. I'm well geekier than most but I draw a line a role playing games.

10. Looking at the time he attended college...
it would be difficult for a geek who was into comics at that time to not be exposed to D&D and at least sit in on one game.

And D&D is not a whole new level of geek. It's the heart of geekdom.

12. What I want to know
Is what was his class and alignment? I'm predicting either lawful good Paladin or chaotic good cleric: he's gonna need a little of both to clean up the mess the Bushits left.

14. Don't look at me
I'm the one who named her venturing parties Ben, Jerry, Haagen and Dasz. Paladins can kick ass physically as well as cast spells, but they've always got to be Lawful Good. It's a pain in the butt, but there it is.

17. 1st ed. player here
Edited on Wed Jan-21-09 05:22 PM by Zodiak Ironfist
I was 9 years old in 1980 when I got my first copy of the Players' Handbook. This was after I burned through Basic and Expert sets. I converted my highest level from basic to AD&D, and I am still playing him (when I rarely play).

Guess what his name is......Zodiak Ironfist! He's a 10th level fighter/11th level magic-user drow elf. When I made him, there weren't even any rules for drow....just a single line of reference in the PH.

If Obama played DnD regularly, he might have learned some good life skills from it. I have found that my long-time experience with DnD taught me some good lessons.....greed kills, party unity is important, things are not always as they appear, and good does not mix well with evil.

BTW...even though I am generally considered a "nice guy"....I like to play evil. For one, it allows me to explore a part of my mind I do not let out in public, and two, it is more of a challenge.

21. That's curious - by the same reasoning I like Paladins
because in real life I'm a morally ambiguous atheist (see my real self as CG or CN).

22. And just as importantly, did he ever have a party survive the Tomb of Horrors?
If so, it proves that he's the cautious, thinking type well-suited to the Presidency.

24. Ooh... really, no offense, but I feel a little geeky and a little unclean just having
skimmed through this thread.

So, if we find out our president fills this bill, maybe we should sort of keep it hush-hush.
