Only one thing to like about Gupta is his America's Killer Diet documentary
on CNN. I saw it and he is right about America's diet sucking and the foods we are offered as consumers being terrible for us (corn syrup anyone?). As a diabetic this means a lot to me. Our diets are killing us. However, his fights with Michael Moore make me like him less. I am not sure about this pick but at least he will be outspoken about the food that we are able to choose from being slim pickings health-wise.

1. He was wrong about Michael Moore and he said so. The job of
SG is a public relations one. To be good at it, you have to be able to speak to people in a way they understand, and have people trust your opinions. Sanjay is good at both of those. I'm willing to give most of the blame for the Moore thing on the people who did the research for Sanjay. I think he will do the job very well.

3. I think he will do a god job as well.
As long as he speaks up against what the food industry has done to our country and our kids I am okay with him.

10. That's simply not true. He never admited he smeared Moore or that his (Gupita) facts were wrong.
Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 01:13 AM by John Q. Citizen
Maybe i'm wrong. Please give me a link to where he admitted his smear on Moore was wrong and his apology.

Thanks!

22. I'd also like to know
where he admitted he was wrong. I followed it closely at the time and I never heard an apology. My husband who is a physician when he heard of the appointment said WTF. If he is to only be there to sell Obama's plan that will be fine, but if he is to help shape policy he is a crappy choice.

2. Gupta v. Moore is wildly exaggerated.
Sure, they butted heads. But it's nothing to write home to mom about.

12. Well that is my only option as a type 2 diabetic. Its all about diet.
I worry 24/7 about my diet. And I have to exercise all the time because taking insulin every day makes it hard to loose weight. I am happy to be at even a normal BMI and my blood sugars to be at a good level but its a constant struggle. But Gupta actually does blame the food, all the crap that is sold to us and what is in it. At least on the docu I saw he did.

16. It's really hard for diabetics!
I know several people who struggle constantly.

Glad to hear Gupta trashes the crap they sell us, because it makes it all the more difficult for people with medical conditions.

19. Yeah, the stuff sold to us is so bad for us
I had to relearn how to eat. Whole grains on everything, less processed foods. Its not really the sugar content but how many carbs and what the carbs are made of. But corn syrup is in everything, soup, crackers, granola bars, bread. But I need carbs or my blood sugar drops too low. Gupta trashes the food industries for selling us bad options.

28. As said below, he also blames that
There are a lot of causes for the obesity epidemic and the crap that is sold to us that they call "food" is one of them.

15. From all I've seen of Sanjay, he mostly explaines medical things
to people, and sometimes recommends prevention methods for many different diseases.

From reading a lot of the criticisms of Sanjay, I think many people are viewing the SG position as something it's not. The SG doesn't have anything to do with food additives. That's USDA. He certainly can recommend changing your diet to help reduce obesity and many diseases that are aggrivated by diet, and I think he has the credibility to explain what's real when there is a health scare like the bird flu, and diseases caused by the mishandeling of animal products, and of course what to avoid to prevent exposure to melamine conatminated foods from China.

Hmmm, maybe they are.

23. AFAIK the additional responsibilities they were talking about were
helping to design & promote Obama's health care policy. How do you see that as me thinking they're lying?

24. Oh, I thought your point was he wouldn't have much power any way, except the power of suggestion.
Forming policy is a lot of power though.

Personally, I am worried, because he doesn't even realize we have a problem.

Of course, why would he? He's got good health care.
