Rick Warren Doubles Down, Accuses Critics Of "Christophobia"
Rick Warren Doubles Down, Accuses Critics Of "Christophobia"

Via John Aravosis at AMERICAblog, Rick Warren is doubling down and accusing his critics of "hate-speech" and "Christophobia."

Rachel Maddow has the video, and takes Warren to task for the hypocrisy of saying that it's unfair to call his views hateful while simultaneously accusing his critics of hate speech. Moreover, as Rachel notes, Warren flat-out lies about his comments comparing gay marriage to pedophilia and incest.

Setting aside Warren's role as inaugural invocation speaker (for a brief moment), I don't think there's any way to defend what he is now saying. I accept the proposition that it's possible to disagree on the issue of gay marriage without calling someone names.

But there's really no comparison between gay marriage and incest or pedophilia, and if Warren thinks they are equivalent, he's either a fan of incest and pedophilia, or he has serious problem with gay people. And calling his critics "Christophobes" just makes matters worse.

A simple apology from Warren for having made the comparison probably would have made this whole controversy go away. But now he's doubling down, and it's just making matters worse.

:::

Anytime Rick Warren's name is mentioned, there seems to be a fair number of people who just want the issue to get swept under the rug. I have great sympathy for that view. I want this mess to go away, too. Obviously, the last thing we need is a divisive force at the inauguration.

13. You nailed it!
Gawd, one thing about people of Warren's ilk is that they are forever the martyrs, even if it means trying to portray their victims as persecutors.

Is it better to support organized patriarchal religion

wlile, presumably, trying to change it from within?

Vatican II has been overturned as well as Liberation

Theology -- and the RCC is being pulled further to the

right by this Pope, supposedly all the way to Evangelism.

Opus Dei is back in and the RCC's war on women and homosexuals

continues on, with this Pope increasing the intolerance.

Granted the RCC is no longer as comfortable as it once was

in spreading hateful propoaganda against Jews.

"Manifest Destiny" and "Man's Dominion Over Nature" continue

to be the license for elites to exploit nature.

Is it wise to support such a church or is it hypocritical?

15. Let's give Warren more free press so that he makes even more money!
Is that the intent?

Face it. Warren is going to make that 1:32 invocation speech.

Do we give him more attention than he deserves and give him free press so he can pimp his shit? Or do we voice our opinion at the event by turning our back at the ceremony when he speaks?

16. You're blaming us and not Obama, who gave him the honor of speaking at the inaugural?
That's not even close to a rational argument, and I'd strongly advise you to take some time to reflect on future posts before you hit the submit button.

Thanks.

17. Blaming the rape victim syndrome!
In case you haven't noticed, Warren just call us a bunch of Christophobes!

This shit ain't going away! Instead of criticizing us, you should be taking Obama to task for his failure to take corrective action in inviting a homophobe, misogynist, anti-Semite, and crook to give the invocation at his Inaugural.

There goes the entire nation of Israel straight to Hell! Isn't this warped theology basically anti-Semitic crap that laid the foundations for centuries of religious persecution?

37. According to the New Testament,
everyone who does not rejects Jesus is condemned. Jews are included but it extends to all non-Christians. That's standard belief for all evangelicals, conservative Catholics, and others who feel the need to accept the entire Bible.

The church as a whole has been extremely anti-Semitic ever since the first century. There are many shocking examples of vicious antisemitism from 1 Thessalonians through Martin Luther. Now, not so much. I don't attribute the belief itself to bigotry or hatred.

I am an atheist BTW, so I don't believe hell exists. Muslims (or Christians for that matter), may think I'm going to hell, but who cares?

-----------------------------

"Christophobes" may not be exactly on the mark, but there is an enormous hostility toward traditional Christianity in the progressive community. It's almost analogous to the view of Islam on the right.

Much of it derives from a misunderstanding of the Bible. People seem create an acceptable Jesus out of a few verses in the Sermon on the Mount and atttribute any differing opinions to personal vice. Actual believers have to wrestle with a lot of very difficult passages and interpretations. There is a lot more liberality in practice than you might guess from simple statements of dogma.

The previous post was not about whether Rick Warren is a hateful individual (which I don't have an opinion on and don't particularly care about), but about his characterization of a certain segment of the left. Sometimes your enemies have your number better than you might think, and it helps to look in a mirror once in a while.

27. I don't think it's possible to be scandalous enough in slandering gays
The media will never blow it up into a big enough story that Obama will have to revoke the invitation, because most Americans don't think it's scandalous to be anti-gay. When Eminem was under fire for his anti-gay lyrics, he just accused gays of being "heterophobic", and then won a bunch of Grammies for his album.

30. If Christianity were like Jesus, it wouldn't be offensive, but it's not.
There's more "pork" in "Pork & Beans" than Jesus in Christianity.

Jesus: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the prisoners, do not judge.

Christianity: those who will not work, neither let them eat; lock 'em up and throw away the key; you're all going to hell.
