What would you like to see happen in the first 100 days of an Obama administration/Dem Congress?
Edited on Sat Dec-20-08 06:47 PM by ruggerson
For me:

1. Executive order on stem cells, reversing Bush. Then comprehensive congressional legislation authorizing federal stem cell research - as much funds as are deemed needed by the leading researchers in the field.

2. Start an orderly withdrawal from Iraq.

3. Pass a stimulus package which includes massive infrastructure buildouts and funds major green energy programs.

4. Pass legislation which repeals both Don't Ask Don't Tell and DOMA and has them on Obama's desk by March. Also pass ENDA within the same time frame.

5. Begin the process of eliminating the Department of Homeland Security. Tell Napolitano that her mandate will be to secure our ports and borders and organize her department to merge itself with Defense and Interior.

2. 1. Reverse the new rule about health providers being able to
do whatever the f*ck they want as far as telling patients their options.

2. Orderly Iraq withdrawal

3. For the stimulus, 35k for each taxpayer (it will roughly equal the same 700billion the big companies are getting. Those who are past due in mortgage/credit cards will have the amounts owed automatically deducted from their check).

4. Reverse the gay marriage bans.

5. Immediate relief and overhaul of public schools in poor areas.

3. All of the the OP's list, but also...
1. Repeal of almost all provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act, including all government monitoring of library activities such as Internet access and book checkouts.

2. Transformation of our military into a self-sustaining military, able to care for its own needs - thus, no outsourcing to Blackwater, Halliburton, KBR, etc.

3. Signing the Kyoto treaty on global climate change.

4. Arrest of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney on war crimes charges.

4. Those are good - a couple additions
I agree with you on those. I particularly approve #5. Homeland Security has been a disaster.

My additions:

In addition to those in #4, I want to see the Matthew Shepard Act passed and signed by President Obama in 100 days. This can be done and should be done to honor Matthew Shepard and all of the victims of hate crimes. Dennis and Judy Shepard will be standing by, of course, when the President signs this important legislation.

VERY important: begin to seriously address global warming and climate change. This is where, I hope, President Obama asks Al Gore to step in and help. We need to begin to deal with global warming immediately...it's critical for the survival of our planet.

5. Repeal DOMA and replace it with its opposite--a law that says each state
MUST recognize all legal marriages performed in other states.

Repeal DADT and replace it with its opposite--a law that says that openly GLBT soldiers CAN serve in the military. A repeal alone does us no good--we just revert to the "No gays at ALL" policy that existed before DADT.

Begin the process of reinstating welfare as an entitlement program, abolishing the failed TANF experiment with a return to AFDC, getting rid of time limits and red tape, and placing EDUCATION as a priority above immediate work.

Update the federal poverty index to include the costs of housing, transportation, and childcare; then adjust it for inflation. Use the updated guidelines to determine amounts for Medicaid, AFDC, WIC, and Food Stamps.

Double the Pell Grant for students with an EFC of $0.

Ban the import of Canadian fish until the seal hunt is stopped for good.

Start getting us out of Iraq.

Overturn bans on stem cell research and foreign aid to groups that offer abortion counseling and/or services.

Cancel out every executive order that Bush ever signed, and if there are any worth keeping, replace them with an Obama version.

Start repealing the PATRIOT Act.

6. Open the Books!
Require anyone who gets a bailout or Loan from us, the taxpayers, to let us see what executives and management are and were getting paid.

In comparison to what executives and managemnt were getting the hourly rates of Union workers will prove to be the fair wage they deserve.

Also, I like the idea about everyone getting $35k!

8. Roll out a plan for SINGLE PAYER universal health care coverage.
Why the hell not? We have thrown away trillions in Iraq, and trillions to the financial industry. Why not finally bring us into alignment with the leading democratic nations of the world and give our own people SINGLE PAYER universal health care coverage.

17. I'm impressed with this question, ruggerson. In no way am
I surprised that you came up with it -- it is part and parcel of your usual posts here -- but the timing plus the backstory of citizenship rings many bells in my village.

I'd borrow your excellent suggestions, to a one, and maybe add a few other considerations.

I'd like to see President Obama put a homeless shelter on the grounds of the White House. I'm sure Brit Hume and Bay Buchanan wouldn't like the idea, but after someone with good sense like Richard Clarke was done with the planning, security personnel could stop griping and the plan could go through. The White House is the people's house, and the White House grounds should shelter the people.

An apology to our veterans, IMO, is in urgent order. To borrow from your model in the OP, legislation should be set into the calendar -- sooner rather than later -- to permanently ensure housing and health care for veterans and their families. A repeal of DADT? I don't see any reason why that can't happen in the first 20 minutes. It's long overdue for a total rehaul, and I for one hope someone does not invite Peter Pace to the meeting.

I'd give Daschle whatever it damn well takes to institute meaningful reform in the nation's policy for health care and treatment of the entire population. If it has to be in incremental doses, let's begin with vulnerable populations: the homeless, veterans, the mentally ill, older folks, and younger folks. Daschle never had the cutthroat savagery necessary to fend off Senate Republicans owing to his temperament, which is more of an organizing healer, which mercifully qualifies him for the position Obama appointed him to. Resistance will be considerable, but I give creds to Obama and Daschle on this one.

The front of the White House lawn should be re-landscaped and in the place of just grass and dirt I would like Barack and Michelle Obama to institute an international sculpture garden. Invitations to all what is it -- 190 countries, plus territories -- should be sent out, with a view toward creating a sculpture garden representing all the world's nations, most of which Bush has either laid to waste with war or looked down his nose at for 8 years. It would say that on the grounds of the president's home we seek to acknowledge the contribution of all the world's people. It would say, 'Send us an inspired sample of excellent work for President Obama's international sculpture garden. A sentry will guard its safety. The new president respects its source.'

18. I have no idea what can be done in 100 days
1) Stop the economy from going over the cliff--further over the cliff I mean. Do not forget to hold the jillionaire scam artists who caused this catastrophe accountable. As far as legally possible prosecute them, and hopefully a little bit more than legally possible. Shame them, jail them, set a lasting example. Restore accounting & regulatory oversight and put the fear of God into the moneygrubbers. No Club Fed for the guilty- send them to Federal#meintheass prison. Protect American jobs. Discourage the offshoring of labor and capital flight of all kinds. Nothing will accelerate the economic crisis than a vicious spiral of job loss and payroll cutting.

2) Set in motion the plan to thoroughly restructure - not twiddle or tinker with - the way healthcare is delivered in this country. We cannot afford the wasteful system of private insurance any longer. We ARE virtually in the situation other countries faced after WWII. They had to start over from rubble and were compelled to make sweeping, economical, logical changes. Even before the financial crisis hit it was clear US healthcare was a smoking dysfunctional wreck and a drain on our economy. Further inaction is intolerable.

3) Get us the fuck out of wars we had no business starting and cannot win. I have said since soon after they began that we could not afford them, and I am frankly amazed at how widespread this view has now become. People are sick of it and they understand how terribly it is costing us. It won't undo the damage we've suffered economically and it wasn't the full cause of the meltdown, but throwing good money after bad in the global war on Islam is completely indefensible.

4) Commit this country to the staged -but complete- replacement of petroleum as the basis of our transportation fuels within a 30 year timeframe. This would take the form of mandates to the auto industry (foreign and domestic) and the energy industry and it would also necessitate regulations on real estate development handed down big-government style to states and municipalities. It would require massive government directed research to develop clean fuel and engine technologies. The majority of androgenic greenhouse gas emissions comes from our stupid cars. Coincidentally our car industry can't stand on its own two feet, and won't even survive without Big Government welfare assistance, so don't anybody try to tell me that this would be an unconscionable interference with the sacred workings of capitalism. I'm all done listening to shit like that.

Which brings me to a general principle that I think somehow encapsulates and summarizes the four previous points: stop kissing Ronald Reagan's dead putrefied asshole! EVERYTHING THE REAGAN REVOLUTION BROUGHT TO THIS COUNTRY HAS BEEN SHIT AND STANDS REVEALED NOW AS A FRAUD. I do hope my President Elect grasps how all these dire crises that the country faces fit together and spring originally from the fetid slews of Reaganite Republican ideology. He may, but watching him surround himself with status quo retreads and pledges to fight on, fight on, fight on in foreign lands, it kinda seems like maybe he doesn't.

And oh yeah, Barry is going to have to do quite a lot on the gay rights front to convince me I'm not seeing things in this Rick Warren bullshit. He's going to have to make all my queer dreams come true if he -or the Dem Party- wants to see any more of my queer money or get my vote again.
