When they control the DNC and the entire party machinery, it's an incredibly daunting task to go up against an incumbent which is why nobody does it. If the President is very unpopular (like say Jimmy Carter or Bush Sr.) then it might happen. But if he's popular then there's very little chance of it.

But the problem is much deeper than that. The fact is that some of Obama's cabinet choices are simply WRONG by any reasonable assessment. And some others might appeal to the DLC appeasers who don't mind the top 1% controlling all the goddamn wealth in this country, but not to actual Democrats.

I don't regret working for/voting for Obama, and I certainly don't think that McCain would have been a better choice. That doesn't mean that I can't be pissed off about his choice of Warren to speak at the inauguration.
