To LGBTs: I firmly believe Obama "has your back"
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 11:57 PM by scheming daemons
...and I think his actions in office will be to your liking.

I believe your progress during the years 2009 through 2012 will be greater than the previous three decades combined.

But I could be just a kool-aid drinking fanboy.

We'll see.

I want evidence! All I see is Obama giving an exalted spot in the Inaugural to a man that supported Prop 8. This is like finding out that General Benedict Arnold betrayed us to the Brits.

Having that hateful bigot up there on a stage to the world after all the shit he's done to the GLBT community --- who supported his ass --- is betrayal.

13. The Prez of the U.S. doesn't really have any authority in the gay rights arena, unless...
unless he has the opportunity to veto a bill (like a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage....which the Republican Congress couldn't even get passed, so it's sure that a Dem. Congress won't pass one).

Gay rights are usually decided at the local and state levels, and in the courts.

Correction: The Prez can give gays rights in the military.

I can't think of any other ways the President can affect the gay rights issues, can you?

19. You appoint a gay SCOTUS? Or appoint a liberal SCOTUS, and assume he's not anti-gay?
I think it's fair to say that almost any Dem. Prez would appoint a more liberal S.Ct. Justice than a Republican one. Just HOW liberal he or she would be in the future, there's no way to know, for sure.

That's not really a direct link to gay rights.

51. Yeah that Supreme Court has no use in all of this
:eyes:

D'uh - the best thing that Obama can do is make sure our court is rebalanced out from the 8 years of damage done by Bush. Because the rights that the GLBT community will not be given to them by any congress - it'll be decided in the courts. And with at least 2 SCOTUS justices retiring soon after Obama gets into office - that's when the first big test will happen with Obama.

28. I'm not a gay activist or even keep up w/that issue much, but even I know that O doesn't support
Obama doesn't support gay marriage, personally. Like Hillary Clinton, Biden, and almost every other politician in the country, he supports civil unions.

Not that it matters what his personal beliefs are regarding that issue. He is against constitutional amendments banning gay rights. I think he is in favor of gays in the military. Beyond that, his personal beliefs don't mean much of anything.

"The queers aren't shutting up and it turns out that a lot of straight Democrats are on their side! wtf!"

"Try to talk them down by promising pie in the sky by and by. It worked last time. Do it again."

"Gotcha!"

34. I'm straight but this still sounds like "sit down and quit embarassing Obama" to me...
I think Obama is entitled to choose who he wants but I think he also has to take the criticism for trying to "triangulate". He's suppposed to be on our side in this and not providing life support and status to the right wing evangelists whose movement is now in a coma and fading.

It's hard to say you are for change and then go do stuff like this and not expect criticism.

For my money, the best person to do the invocation would have been Jimmy Carter.

Nothing says they have to be an ordained minister, and Jimmy Carter has a long time reputation as a deacon in his church and has taken the conservative Christian evangelists to task publicly in the past. He walks the walk and talks the talk and has a credibility that these TV preachers have never had.

38. It's clear that the message came down from Obama headquarters to try to get us to shut up.
First we were insulted and yelled at, and now we're being patted on the heads. Neither will work and I find this latter approach to be laughably lame.

It's becoming obvious that the Obama team doesn't know jack-shit about gay people or gay rights, and they have made a serious error in assuming that nobody but queers cares about gay rights. There are a heck of a lot of straight people who are as mad as fire about this.

It will be benign neglect time for us from President Obama. Not one fucking thing will be done for us from this Administration. Maybe, if we're lucky, we won't get the blatant hostility towards GLBT Americans that the current Administration has shown us.
