So here's a hypothetical to chew on........
Let's say the senate races in Alaska, Minnesota, and Georgia all work out in our favor.....

Obama meets with McCain on Monday. Suppose McCain gets a cabinet position, but AZ gets a new senator....

Bringing our total to 60 - without Holy Joe - and allowing for his ass to be thrown out.

Would it be worth having Gramps in the cabinet if it meant having real control of the Senate?

discuss.......

1. OK... Veteran's Administration Anyone?
Secretary of the Navy?

I wouldn't feel bad about these two.

Wouldn't want him as SecState, SecDef or SecTreas or Intel Director though...

Doug D.

9. Nothing... my DAD is career Army and a vet
I don't think he would be the kind of VA administrator that he has been as a Senator and I have to think that he would have some first hand understanding of the problems of veterans having been a POW and having had service related injuries etc.

2. One problem - Arizona law requires the replacement to be from the same party
http://www.azleg.state.az.us/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/ars/16/00222.htm&Title=16&DocType=ARS

"C. For a vacancy in the office of United States senator, the governor shall appoint a person to fill the vacancy. That appointee shall be of the same political party as the person vacating the office and shall serve until the person elected at the next general election is qualified and assumes office."

4. Well OK. That's easy enough to solve.
Find an "RLC" republican. Someone who will call him/herself a Repuke (and thus be able to be appointed McCain's replacement) but actually vote with the Democrats most of the time.

6. Yeah, see, that would work, except
Edited on Fri Nov-14-08 08:13 PM by Occam Bandage
DLC members vote with the Democratic party the overwhelming majority of the time. Even Holy Joe votes Dem four times out of five. McCain (when not in White House mode) is about as Republican as the DLC is Democratic.

8. Why on earth would Obama give McCain a cabinet position?
That would be a slap in the fact to all of us who voted AGAINST McCain, IMO.

10. Well, unless it was as I hinted in the original post, I wouldn't have any idea
If it led to a Liberdouche-less, fillibuster-proof Senate, there would be a logical strategic reason for doing so. But the state laws of Arizona seem to discourage such a thing happening.

Damn state laws..... if fucking Connecticut had the same law that most states do, about primary losers NOT being able to switch parties and run in the general, we wouldn't even have a Liberdouche problem right now. Ned Lamont would be a guaranteed part of the 60 Senate seats, with only Bernie Sanders needed as the "extra" vote, and certainly one we could count on when it comes to crucial votes.

And AZ already has an odd situation where the governor is replaced by the Secretary of State, which may well happen as Janet Napolitano has been mentioned as a possible cabinet pick. Problem is that AZ's SOS is a neocon Repuke.

12. Yes, with 3 buts
But number one: the position McCain is chosen for must be easily neutralizable (in terms of its effect on the american/world populace), while still allowing him to showcase his own incompetence in such a way that he can be put out to pasture ASAP.

But number 2: You would have to guarantee to me that the "replacement" Isn't going to be a worse choice than the original. Given AZ's "replace like with like" rule, that seems unlikely. Why create a potentially Viable Republican incumbent for their next normal election, when it sure looks like McCain should be easy pickings at that point?

But number 3: If we can do both of the above, why couldn't we do the same with Lieberman (aside from the R governor, of course). Surely 61 is better than 60.

13. Please name Any Cabinet Position...
that you would want McCain to have. I can't think of a single one.

And PLEASE don't say Veteran Affairs. McCain has ZERO sympathy for the average veteran. In fact, his voting record on veterans is beyond shameful.
