Issue of major importance: would it be disrespectful to call my stray cat Obama?
Well?

We've been feeding him for two years, he's now a permanent resident in the garden - we even bought him a little kennel. But we've never settled on a name for him. Does he deserve to be called Obama?

Similarities with the President-elect: Lovely eyes, quite cuddly, greying around the edges. Nimble, aggressive when he needs to be, but generally dignified.

Dissimilarities: He hates change (the cat, not Barack) and the only hope he ever holds in his heart is for an extra pouch of rabbit and carrots in gravy.

What do you think?

And before you cat-loathers suggest it - no, I won't call him Sarah.

Thank you in advance for your help.

3. Absolutely not!
Cats are enlightened creatures, and I'm sure Obama will be very honored to know that someone had the mind to name a cat after him.

6. Call it whatever you want to.
I don't think it would be disrespectful. I am sure there are some pets named George or Grover or another president's name.

7. Name It Renegade
It's a cool name and it's Obama's Secret Service Code Name. That way, you're naming it after our President to be without any concern about being disrespectful by using his actual name.

Of course, I don't think it would be disrespectful anyway, but if you're concerned about it...

I love cats.

11. Using the last name could be interpreted as disrespectful. OTOH, calling him Barack,

would be a sign of affection.

But Purr-ack (upthread) is better, though.

13. An injured stray cat was brought in to my office the day after the election.
While we were trying to locate the owners (based on an unregistered microchip) we mulled around some ideas for a name if we wound up keeping him. He was part black and part white, so the obvious choice was Obama, and we thought "Obie" would be a good nickname.

He went back to his owners safe and sound the next day, and his real name was nothing close to Obama, lol.

17. if i ever get a dog i'm naming him Howard after Dr. Dean.
although Dr. Dean would be an ass kicking name for a dog. I also have a Guinea pig named Bob so i guess you can't go by me.

19. It's a cold night in Dublin, I went out to give him some warm milk - and:
When I shouted "OBIE" he came darting out of his kennel :-) True, that might have been because I was armed with a jug of warm milk, and yes, the neighbours' curtains twitched in a slightly alarmed way, partly because they think I'm shouting out to Obi-Wan Kenobi in my back garden, but Obie's good, very good - it'll do for me!

20. We found a cat about 3 weeks ago. Spouse named him Isaiah
but I was thinking of his full name as Isaiah Hussein Steve...or something.

I think it is a wonderful idea to name the cat after President Elect Obama. That's my two cents.
