Jimmy Carter: Has anybody heard from him?
Jimmy Carter has been noticeably absent from the cameras, microphones, etc. I never even read an official statement from his office after the election. The only thing I found were comments to a local Atlanta TV station while at a football game. The Carter Center news didn't even acknowledge the historic victory for President-Elect Obama. I know that MSNBC has tried to book him for a few minutes and this former president, never one to turn away interviews, has said no.

I hope Former President Carter is okay and things are going well for him and Rosalynn.

1. Me, too.
I'd think that Carter and Obama would be very good friends.

14. Saw Carter interviewed on Situation Room today >>
He said there were 26 voters in his direct family, and all 26 voted for Obama. He said Obama promised him personally, and promised in his campaign that he would be active in seeking peace for Palestine/Israel from the beginning of his admin, not waiting till the end to pursue peace accords, and Carter was very confident that Obama would keep that promise. It was a good interview, and very reassuring since Obama is taking heat from some who fear that Obama will be controlled by AIPAC.

2. Maybe it's a "Georgia Thang"........them folks down there don't like darkies, and they
are forbidding students to mention Obama's name in school.

This isn't a knock on Carter. I love him.... just sayin'

9. No, it's not a "Georgia Thang" and I would appreciate it if everyone would stop acting
like people in Georgia are so fucking stupid that we can't tie our own shoelaces.

I'm the first to admit there are some really severe whackjobs out there (and most are in Congress - I give you Paul Broun of GA's 10th: Ga. congressman calls Obama Marxist, warns of dictatorship http://www.ajc.com/services/content/metro/stories/2008/11/10/congressman_Marxist_obama.html?cxtype=rss&cxsvc=7&cxcat=13), but there are also a lot of good people here trying very hard to beat these ignorant bastards.

That would be the DUers of GA and people like Jim Martin (www.martinforsenate.com).

Jimmy Carter did everything he could but endorse Obama before the primary this year, including telling the press that everyone in his family was supporting Obama and he agreed with his family.

I firmly believe that he knows that he could have been used against Obama and I have seen right wing blogs try to liken Obama to a Carter Administration. JC knows how to play the game better than most and I'm sure his lack of heaping praise on our President Elect is not a slight on Obama.

11. Thank you!
As a recent resident of this state, I could not agree more.
This state is a good state and a wonderful place... and they are not all that stupid as I have seen some people allude to.

I am saddened by seeing the comments here and there about Georgia being a lost cause... you know, we have a runoff, and if people get over that line of thinking, we may actually be able to win this race --- you know, a race that can actually tip things in the senate...

3. If I remember, wasn't Carter snubbed at the convention?
Real liberals are so inconvenient.

That's why they made such a brief appearance at the DNC.

8. No he wasn't "snubbed"
He was shown sitting in the audience and also came on stage with Rosalynn. There was a video tribute to him as well. There's a nice set of pictures of him here: http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/yN-0uWXqwCF/2008+Democratic+National+Convention+Day+2/-akUTyUKu9g/Jimmy+Carter

There has been alot of crap going around about this but I think that he chose to defer to Ted Kennedy, who was originally not expected to attend at the time due to the treatments for his illness, and then if he was able to attend, he wasn't expected to speak. But surprise of all surprises, Ted DID appear and he DID speak... and since he was more actively involved in Obama's campaign than Carter, that to me was a nice gesture of deference.

When asked about Obama's recent victory Carter said, "I think Obama is going to do a very fine job. He's a brilliant young man, he's surrounded himself with very good advisors with economics and so forth, so I have a lot of confidence in him."

18. I love Jimmy....But.....that statement was lame considering the historic nature of the election
His statement - in full:

Statement From Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter

Nov. 5, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

I congratulate Senators Obama and Biden on running a campaign that inspired millions of Americans in the midst of difficult times. Both presidential candidates and parties are to be commended for a hard fought race. It is my hope that they now will move forward together, in the spirit of bipartisanship, to address some of the great challenges facing our nation.

Lame.

20. Considering
the absolutely shitty way the Democrats treated him while in office and shortly afterward, I think it's more than generous. The man is a kind and gentle soul who's worked for the last 40 years to bring opposing sides together. If you want him to be a partisan now you might be wanting up the wrong tree.

IMHO.

17. They mentioned him in the Situation Room while I was at the gym
I didn't stay long enough to catch the story, but he was "coming up" (eventually) and they had an interview with him stating what he thought Obama should work on.

So, though, I agree he's been a bit absent, I think he'll be back soon.
