OK, when do YOU think McCain knew he had lost the election?
I think it was after the first couple of days of campaigning in Pennsylvania, when it became apparent from crowd size that rural voters would not outnumber the Democrats in the cities and suburbs.

2. About two weeks after the convention
when the glitter of the Palin nomination had worn off and he realized, to his horror, what he had chosen as his running mate. The fact that he corrected the woman who called Obama "an Arab" and tried to take the high road and was booed by his own people was the beginning of the end for him, and he knew it.

"I am announcing that I will be a candidate for president of the United States,"

He had to know he was being set up to be the next Bob Dole(without the personality). It's your turn Mac, good luck to ya.

12. The week he wanted to cancel the debate
He was rushing to DC with no plan, just wanting to be like Superman and save the day. Then he ditched out on Letterman.

It seemed to me then that he really didn't seem to know WHAT he was doing so of course he knew he was losing.

13. Steve Schmidt and co. knew the weekend before the last debate.
Newsweek:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/167581/page/2

"On the Sunday night before the last debate, McCain's core group of advisers—Steve Schmidt, Rick Davis, adman Fred Davis, strategist Greg Strimple, pollster Bill McInturff and strategy director Sarah Simmons—met to decide whether to tell McCain that the race was effectively over, that he no longer had a chance to win. The consensus in the room was no, not yet, not while he still had "a pulse.""

16. The night he accepted the nomination
He was forced into the Sarah PaLIEn selection by the Reichwingers in his own party. I think he knew it was a gamble but his chances at that point were not good so he needed to shore up the base, those knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, anti-intellectuals in our midst.

17. Weeks ago.
It's pretty obvious that he's just been going through the motions, campaigning as little as he could get away with. Palin was his Hail Mary, and it was immediately clear that she was a lousy gamble.
