Republicans didn't act like this in 2000 and 2004, when Bush squeaked through by nefarious means in two late victories that you'd hardly call decisive--and there was always something a little hard and divisive about their celebrations anyway. A kind of, "Our America is better than your America!" attitude that was ultimately responsible for the sinking morale of the country over the last 8 years. Then there are celebrations when a sports team wins a competition, like we saw in Boston in 2004 and Phildelphia in 2008--but those are only confined to single cities or regions, and while exciting, aren't exactly what you would call uplifting on a larger scale.
Last night, November 4th, 2008, at 11:00 PM EST, people of all races, ages, classes and backgrounds rejoiced in neighborhoods and squares all across the country, not as supporters of a triumphant competitor, but as a single mass of people, immensely proud of themselves and of their country. Bill Clinton's victory in 1992 (18 years ago!) is the only comparable event that I can remember in my short lifetime, but last night was head and shoulders above even that.
What a win. What a night. What a country.
