Thank God, the streak is broken...!
From the time I was a teenager, I've been active in Democratic politics. Here is a summary of my participation in Presidential races since that time:

1972 - Canvassed for McGovern in Massachusetts during the primaries and in New Hampshire for the general.
RESULT: We lose 49 out of 50 states.

(1976 - Too busy with college. Vote for Carter but don't campaign.)

(1980 - Too busy with graduate school, plus turned off by Carter. Vote for Anderson.)

1984 - Caucus delegate for McGovern, switch to Hart after McGovern withdraws. Work for Mondale in the general.
RESULT: We lose 49 out of 50 states. (Anyone seeing a pattern here?)

1988 - Caucus delegate for Dukakis. Phone-bank for Dukakis in general.
RESULT: We blow 18-point lead in the polls and lose to Poppy.

(1992 - Turned off by politics in general, and restrict myself to voting for Clinton.)

(1996 - Turned off by Clinton's capitulation to Republicans on DOMA, NAFTA, welfare "reform." When race called for Clinton before I even get to the polls, cast protest vote for Nader.)

(2000 - Detest Bush, bored by Gore, too busy at work. Vote for Gore but that's about it.)

2004 - Caucus delegate for Dean. Phone-banking and GOTV for Kerry.
RESULT: Finish final shift with exit polls proclaiming Kerry a sure winner. Kerry concedes the next day.

Anyone understand why I thought, with my record, it might be a good idea for me to do nothing this year? Nonetheless...

2008 - Precinct captain and caucus delegate for Obama. Massive phone-banking and GOTV in general.
RESULT: Amazingly, WE WIN!!!

As David Frye (in I Am The President) had Nixon say after being informed he'd won the 1968 election, "Well, you can't lose 'em all!"

3. Well, I wasn't old enough to vote that first time...
...and it always galled me that I never got the chance to cast my first ballot for McGovern.

4. SAME HERE! My first ever vote was GORE in 2000
I was 31 and my earlier life had me as one of those who never registered--never voted. Voted in 2000, we know what happened. Voted in 2002 and did my part in Oregon...but Congress took a backward step. Voted in 2004 for Kerry....DAM NOT AGAIN!!!!

DID NOT VOTE in 2006 and the House/Senate went our way.

Was tempted to sit it out on grounds of superstition but voted anyway. Since my wife became a citizen and was able to vote (for Obama of course) I felt the streak could be broken based on that.

YES!!!!! Success.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

5. Haha, did you see Ben Affleck on SNL this week?
He pretty much said the exact same thing, and then summed it up by saying that since his support seems to have the opposite effect... he announced his endorsement for McCain. lol, and look! it worked!!

6. Hmmm...Maybe the Obama campaign didn't WANT me working for them...
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 06:31 AM by regnaD kciN
I understand from several mailing-list acquaintances that they all received a "personal" congratulatory e-mail from Obama, supposedly sent just before heading off to his victory celebration.

Strange...I never received that e-mail, although I received many others from the Obama campaign.

Maybe they saw my past record, and really didn't want me on their campaign?

Anyway, it seems to be "no thanks to you!" :-(
