From the time I was a teenager, I've been active in Democratic politics. Here is a summary of my participation in Presidential races since that time:
1972 - Canvassed for McGovern in Massachusetts during the primaries and in New Hampshire for the general.
RESULT: We lose 49 out of 50 states.
(1976 - Too busy with college. Vote for Carter but don't campaign.)
(1980 - Too busy with graduate school, plus turned off by Carter. Vote for Anderson.)
1984 - Caucus delegate for McGovern, switch to Hart after McGovern withdraws. Work for Mondale in the general.
RESULT: We lose 49 out of 50 states. (Anyone seeing a pattern here?)
1988 - Caucus delegate for Dukakis. Phone-bank for Dukakis in general.
RESULT: We blow 18-point lead in the polls and lose to Poppy.
(1992 - Turned off by politics in general, and restrict myself to voting for Clinton.)
(1996 - Turned off by Clinton's capitulation to Republicans on DOMA, NAFTA, welfare "reform." When race called for Clinton before I even get to the polls, cast protest vote for Nader.)
(2000 - Detest Bush, bored by Gore, too busy at work. Vote for Gore but that's about it.)
2004 - Caucus delegate for Dean. Phone-banking and GOTV for Kerry.
RESULT: Finish final shift with exit polls proclaiming Kerry a sure winner. Kerry concedes the next day.
Anyone understand why I thought, with my record, it might be a good idea for me to do nothing this year? Nonetheless...
2008 - Precinct captain and caucus delegate for Obama. Massive phone-banking and GOTV in general.
RESULT: Amazingly, WE WIN!!!
As David Frye (in
I Am The President) had Nixon say after being informed he'd won the 1968 election, "Well, you can't lose 'em all!"
