And change your avatar! Woo hoo!!

Use ivoted2008.jpg for the new one (to save you from searching thru the huge list of images).

I got to my voting location about 6:55am and was out about 10 min. later. The long lines had died down (20 or so were in line to turn in their ballot and all voting booths were full) but the time I'd voted for OBAMA (with a big ass grin on my face!) and was ready to turn in my ballot, there was only one person in front of me.

I'm in a heavily Republican area, though. Too damn many McKKKain/PaLIEn yard signs.

Polling place is in the school admin building, right next to the elementary school, so I took my 5 YO (birthday today! woo hoo!) in with me before I walked him in to school. No lines, no hassles, no waiting. And the ladies gave MG Jr. an "I voted" sticker too!

I voted. Heavily Republican area. Longer lines than 2004, but I suspect...
It's precisely because the Republicans had no reason to get out and vote early. Koolaid drinking sign wavers. It really is sickening to see children wildly dancing about with McCain-Palin and Yes on 2 (legalizing discrimination and violating the American value of equal rights) signs.

DU is my main news source. I spend way too much time on DU every day even without posting - If I did, I'd never get anything done!

But today seems the perfect day to check back in and say I voted at 6:30 in NYC, ten minute wait, new registrant in my district, all smooth.

Now go do it -

38. St Louis City
Got in line about 5:45 and it stretched all the way down a city block and half way down the side block. The local Fox affiliate was there shooting and the crowd was all smiles. Once voting started at 6:00, the line went pretty quickly, and I finished in about an hour.

Things I noticed: Voters had a choice of paper ballots for scanning or electronic machines - most machines sat idle. The crowds were getting larger as I left. St Louis is fired up for Obama!

41. My wife and I just voted in New Jersey
There were six or seven districts at our polling place. There were short lines of ten or less voters at each district table. People were coming and going at a steady pace. The parking lot was FULL. The streets all around our polling place were lined with cars. Spaces were filled as soon as they were available. We've can't remember ever seeing this volume of voters here. Everything was very orderly. Even with the crowds it only took us about ten minutes to vote.

I voted the STRAIGHT DEMOCRATIC TICKET.

EVERYONE GET OUT AND VOTE!

OBAMA '08! :)

42. I voted in Terre Haute, Indiana
Got there at 7:25. About 10-12 people in front of me. I was the 99th ballot cast. This is a small precinct in the country so having 99 votes by that time is huge. Just for comparison, during the primary I voted after work and was #73.

All ages there, and a few who looked like this was their first time voting. Gives me hope that Indiana might turn blue.

No waiting but a steady stream of voters. It was a great feeling to vote for Barack. I took a moment to savor it and reflect on the historical implication. I've lived through all the disappointments from Nixon on and to finally be on the brink of a hopeful chapter of progress is almost unbelievable. I'm only 53 but honestly never thought I'd live to see the day. Obama has accomplished what was thought to be the impossible. Simply amazing.

78. Harris County, Texas
Arrived at 6:25 to a line of 30 or so. I was worried because I'd just relocated from Los Angeles, and don't yet have a Texas drivers license. Everything went smoothly....I was quickly found on the voter rolls, but the whole touch screen system (which we don't use in Los Angeles County) left me feeling disconcerted. I pushed "cast ballot" for a straight dem ticket, and all the proper lights displayed, but I received no record of my vote. Just a screen with "Your vote has been cast. You may leave the both." Here's hoping I did my small part to turn Harris County blue for the first time in 12 years!

I hadnt noticed ;)

Seriously, I voted for him not against McCain. Ive never felt so filled.. with Hope and Change on such a deeply personal level. Ive never had someone I looked up to that wasnt a real person in my life. Obama makes me want to be not just a better person but the best that I can be. I am inspired beyond anything Ive ever felt before.

It is a very red area - lots of mccain bumper stickers - so we celebrated together with a terrorist fist bump. I was thrilled to see both my sons' ballots, their first election, had been received as "A" was listed next to their names.

Go Obama!

I was in line for 2 hours--thankfully indoors as it's been raining since last night--and the line was massive!!! Lots and lots and LOTS of young voters who were doing so for the first time, older oters who had not voted before today...last time in 2004 it was only a 15-20 minute wait at the most. Today, you can pretty much guarantee 2 hours in line here. some of the other local areas like Western Branch had long lines from outside. This is historic!

And in 2 hours I have some volunteer work to do for Obama :bounce:

138. I voted in Newark, DE!
There was traffic galore and street parking was difficult to find. The polling place (McVey) was home to 3 districts. Each district was allotted 3 machines. I'd say there were 60 or so people split between 3 lines in that room and voting took only 15 min. When we were leaving, a ton more people were coming in and the parking lot was filling up. I imagine it was people taking early lunch, etc. Many, many people shaking hands and handing out literature outside the school, mainly repubs with a few dems sprinkled here and there. The repubs were right up front and in your face as you walked to the building.

No little "I voted" stickers given out this year. :( The atmosphere was very positive, but it was much more 'business' than in the past. No chats about dogs barking, neighborhood activities, etc. that we've always heard and partaken in before.

On a disheartening note, I had to go to the doc for a followup appointment this morning. There were 3 people sitting in the office and the doc had some channel that was floating all the campaign ads from PA. I was the only person voting for Obama. One wasn't voting for either - she was voting Barr, and the other guy (a vet) was voting McCain. My BP was up when the nurse called me back. I told her maybe they should turn off the TV for today.

Good news, here: Democratic ballots have been returned at a higher rate than Republican ballots. normally only a dozen voters. At 6:50 AM there was already a ling that grew to 100 in 10 minutes. Still it was fast in comparison to some other places in the country.

One of my co workers voted last night at the early voting place and he said it took an hour, that was at 3:00 PM in Oakland, CA.

FWIW, I vote absentee, but take my ballot to the precinct in person.

166. I EV'd Saturday night in Central FL
One hour wait and I had to park in the grass lot next door to the library. In 2004 the machines were all touchscreen, this year they're using opti-scanners so it's a slower process.

I voted a straight Dem ticket except for the No Party Affiliation up against a Repub (no Dem challenger) and NO on Prop 2 "Marriage Protection".

Hoping for a Dem blowout nationally but I'll be ecstatic just for an Obama win.

I went with relatives to vote around seven this morning in CA. There were no lines and the people working the polls were very nice. They used paper ballots. When I finished, I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders.

Then, we went to the Democratic office in my town and helped place some Obama/Biden signs on the main avenue.

Yes, this is a special day. Yes we can. :)

Lines weren't long at all, only waited 15 minutes and only because it took forever for them to explain to an older man how to use the voting machines. I wanted to yell out "Just choose paper ballots!" to everyone.

There were only a couple of machines and the rest were booths, about 15 or so.

No one was wearing any Obama stuff (except me...hee hee, I had a tiny button that i hid under my hair as i walked up to the volunteers.)

I voted first thing in the morning 7am as soon as the polls opened.

I also made sure to vote NO on Prop 8!

I've never been so excited to participate in an election.

I said a silent prayer as I cast my ballot.

This is for my grandfather who spent 43 years in the coal mines.

This is for my best friend Plug who spend 35 years in the same mine.

This is for my father, who was punished severly by the school board because he was head of the teacher's union.

This is for my sons and daughter, may they never live under tyranny disguised as democracy as we have.

FOR THE PEOPLE!!!!

Usually in our little precinct, poll workers outnumber the voters by about 2:1 at any given time...NOT TODAY!!
:woohoo:
Just got back from Obama field office in Mankato...there are volunteers standing in line waiting for open phone lines! I spent 4 hours calling, then gave up my line so someone else could participate in the GOTV effort - made over 200 calls -
What a great day! It's 72 and sunny in Minnesota in NOVEMBER...crazy good weather!
I BARACKED THE VOTE!!

Edited on Tue Nov-04-08 01:53 PM by FlaGranny
My DH and I just got back, voted at about 1:20 p.m. No lines to vote, but busy, with all voting stations full. There was a line at the machine that eats the voting paper because they were "putting in a new roll(?)" Our polling place is probably 95% seniors and heavily Democratic. Voting usually runs smoothly there.

My wife and I voted on paper, our 2 year old was bored while we were voting for the dozens of judges. The awesome Republican election judge gave her a string of "I Voted" stickers to play with, so we left with her wearing a bunch stickers on her shirt. He must have been a granddad. Cheers to him! :toast:

252. Voted THis Morning in Lewisville, Tx! (Just North of Dallas)
My polling place was not very crowded, but I went at 9:30, after the before-work rush and before the lunch rush, waited perhaps 20 minutes.

The roadside leading up to the polling spot was awash in Obama signs, only one McCain sign.

Poll workers were courteous and very helpful. They'd announce it every time a first time voter came to the table and the whole room would applaud, and we applauded a LOT. I have never seen so many people younger than me voting, and I am only 38. In Texas we get our choice of paper ballots or electric machines. The electric machines were interesting. They were not touch screen. They had a wheel that was like using an iPod to scroll through selections then hit Enter when you highlighted the one you wanted. Your selection was very clearly marked and the machines were easy to use. No problems on my end with vote switching.

OBAMA TONIGHT!

254. They had to set up table booths where I vote.
Also they had no straight ticket vote. You need to fill in all the circles you want. They must feel the straight ticket vote is not the way to go. A lot of new registrations too.

It looked like a lot of younger voters and women. I think the women were voting for Obama as well. A lot of smiles too.

262. Quick and easy in rainy (drizzly) North Carolina.
Got there about 9:10, signed in and went straight to an empty booth. #2 son, myself and my mom took about 10 minutes. #1 son went at 7:30 this morning, in and out in about 10 minutes also.

A poll worker said we just missed the crowds. They all looked tired but happy. We have good people at our place, always nice and helpful. There were a couple people doing paper ballots while we were there (usually a few every time we go).

There was a tent with Democratic stuff (signs and voting reminders just outside the door, but nary a sign of any republicans.

Went to the store for special dinner stuff, and got two sweet potato pies at Wally World for $3 each. Yum!

279. I voted in the Philly Burbs.
Mom voted this morning in Norristown. Little sis waited 2.5 hours to vote at Temple U this afternoon. I'm currently calling all my friends and loved ones in PA (who may not appear on any Obama list) and making sure they voted Obama.

I also phone banked in Paoli, left a lot of messages. Did talk to one proud papa who was happy to tell me he voted Obama and that his two sons, away at college, voted via absentee ballots.
:toast:

Based only on my observations, I feel Philly and the Mainline is going Obama. And you know what they say:

As Philly and Pittsburgh go, so goes PA. :grouphug:

280. Voted at 8:30 this morning in Flint, Mich. for a bunch of Democrats.
Lots of people in line but it went fast. There was an air of excitement and of something else. Some kind of undercurrent of suppressed giddiness if you ask me. Maybe I was imposing my own state of being onto others, but people did seem more jovial than I remember from election days past. Lots of smiling eye contact. When I filled in the oval next to Obama's name I realized it was the first time I ever voted for someone and felt genuinely thrilled at the thought of what a great president he can be for this country. When I voted for Kerry my chief motivator was the rage I felt toward Bushco.

Afterward I canvassed a neighborhood, hanging doorknockers specifying the location of the polling place for those residents. It was an AA neighborhood and once it got late enough that people were out in their yards and saw me walking around, a few of them told me with a sort of amused politeness "honey everyone here already voted." All in all a fun start for this day.

298. We went as a family
at 12:30 PM MST and had no line at all. It took about 10 minutes even with a cheat sheet due to the long ballot (local issues) Obama was the second on the form and I marked it with a real flourish, knowing that Mom was there cheering me on!

We had a choice for voting by touch screen or by paper (optical)ballots. Believe me, I chose the paper one. One of the election volunteers said it had been running about 5 to 1 for the paper ones, so even in a heavily rethug area, they are cautious of the touch screen.

So even though this area is about 80% repub, we did our part and with a little luck and with the jobs and houses here in the dumps, maybe, just maybe, we could see our county turn from the red it's been since it was founded.

323. I voted in the San Francisco bay area.
I got up early and was at the polls 15 minutes before they opened. There were only 8 people ahead of me. One poll worker did not show up so that slowed things down a bit. Most people were prepared and had their sample ballots that were mailed by the county already completed before they entered the voting booths. We vote on paper here. HOORAY! The line was beginning to grow deeper, as I exited the polling station. It was hard to read the crowd'smood. It was very early. People for the most part looked prepared and determined and somewhat anxious.

Go Obama! Win it for Toot!!

326. I voted on October 23rd in Iowa.
Straight party ticket. I was the only person there at the time. Only took a few minutes. :)

Hubby voted yesterday. Said there were a handful of people there at that time.

I think turnout is going to be huge this year. :bounce:

331. I voted in CT.
I had said that I would wait until my husband got home from work to go with him, but I just couldn't wait a minute longer! Besides, that means I can bake the pie while he goes to vote! Family multi-tasking. Yeah, that's the ticket!
