Senator Stevens LIES about his conviction on 7 felony counts "I have not been convicted of anything"
Edited on Fri Oct-31-08 04:08 PM by DeadElephant_ORG
Have you all seen this?

"Republican Sen. Ted Stevens told Alaska voters Thursday night that he has “not been convicted of anything” — less than a week after being found guilty on all seven counts at his corruption trial.":

God DAMN IT - the truth still matters.

6. WTF??? It must be the Alaska water...
No other explanation. Up = down. Left = Right. Guilty = not convicted of anything.

another Republican tries to muscle their way into power by denying reality.

14. He's a criminal and a liar. What else did you expect?
If he doesn't go down, he will be a major indictment on the Republican Party. Especially if he doesn't quit and is serving there as a convicted felon.

18. actually, seriously, is it a crime to publicly claim you're not a felon when you are? Fraud?
obviously in a job app it would be grounds for dismissal, but is it perfectly legal for felons to claim they aren't felons?

21. Everbody in prison is "innocent"
and I think a law preventing that may infringe upon their rights to claim wrongful conviction (which happens). Then again, there's Megan's Law that requires sex offenders to tell their neighbors.

25. excellent point about Megan's Law! Stevens did NOT claim "wrongful conviction" or that he is innoce
innocent. He claimed that he was not convicted. As a senator, we can expect him - in fact any senator - to understand that distinction - particularly as Steven just went through the experience personally not a week ago. When did you last hear a pronouncement of you being convicted? Seems like the whole subject should be very fresh in the senator's mind.

28. No. One is convicted when one is convicted. One is sentenced when one is sentenced.

The latter has no bearing on the former.

30. here are Stevens' word explaining his contention:
From the NY Times:

“I have not been convicted of anything yet,” he said, a reference to the fact that a conviction does not formally take place until a judge enters final judgment upon sentencing. The guilty verdicts, he said, were “a temporary situation,” an incremental setback until a judge throws them out or Mr. Stevens wins on appeal.

It was a distinctive way of seeing things, to be sure, but Mr. Stevens, 84, a practicing lawyer in Alaska before he entered politics and now the longest-serving Republican in Senate history, has never been one to stay down on the mat.

Mark Begich needs some last minute help reaching $25,000 goal. Anything you can give will help keep convicted bribe taker Ted Stevens out and to avoid a new, special election to replace him. Thanks.
