There Could Have Been No Better GOP Ticket Than McCain/Palin
For the Democrats, that is.

Look at it. You have a shotgun wedding between what is considered the moderate wing (HAH) in McCain and the The/Neo-=con wing in Palin.

The reasoning the theo/Neo-cons pushed Palin was they wanted her branded as the future of the party. They wanted to introduce her in this election because they know they can control her like they controlled the blivet. They miscalculated horribly because of how Palin was handled. Her narrative is set and they will have to spend most of the next four years remaking her.

Meanwhile, the polling information will support the more moderate elements of the GOP in the contention that Sarah Palin was a drain on the ticket.

This sets the stage for the most brutal civil war in GOP history. The moderates will point to the radicals as the reason for losing and the radicals will point to the moderates with the same disdain.

One of the two sides will win in the short termn. This, however, does not matter because the other side will be so jilted they jump ship.

Had the TheoNeocons allowed McCain to go with his gut and put Lieberman on the ticket, the moderate wing would have been 100% to blame for the loss and teh theoneocoons would have been triumphant with little in the way of a civil war.

Attempting to marry the two wings in what was inevitbaly a poor year for Republicans was the best possible outcome for the Democratic Party. While they fight their civil war, the Democrats can work to hold onto their majority in 2010 as well as move their agenda forward with little in teh way of obstruction from the minority party.

Furthemore, it looks like Barack Obama will devestate the old GOP "Souther Strategy". It won't work any more.

The Democrats gave teh Republicans enough rope. They've now shot themselves in both feet.

3. excellent summation, although technically McCain is also a NeoCon
He is a signatory member of the PNAC, the very group who has lead us astray domestically and in foreign relations (ie: invasions). I make it a point to tie this anchor firmly around the neck of McCain, linking him directly to the likes of Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perl, and several other less-popular-than-Bush hawks.

I think it's quite telling that the closest thing they have to strategic genius is to cheat. That worked on a few elections, but obviously doesn't work on other fronts. Were they more intelligent tacticians and planners, we would not be in the same mess we're in in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This lack of long range vision is what is the driving force behind every element of the economic collapse as well. They sought strategies and tactics which would result in short term profits out the wazoo without considering the longer term damage which probably happened faster than they expected.

They stole most of their political capital and pretended to have more than they did, and squandered it, hopefully irrevocably. In the light of these crises and failures of basic philosophy and policies, the majority of America - the 77% of non-Kool Aid drinkers - are waking up and saying "no more!" One thing to be said for us, that despite our other shortcomings, we are a nation of people who won't put up with much shit and will eventually be mad as hell about being taken for a ride.

I find it deliciously ironic that their own propaganda backfired on them as well. They've convinced their followers to not trust McCain, calling him too liberal for years, and to also not trust government and to consider discussions of responsibility for our actions as anti-American. Those three things are now proving to be a large part of their downfall:
1 - McCain is not trusted by many on the right. Ironically, not for the reasons he should be mistrusted, but because Rush told them to.
2 - Many of the dyed in the wool rightists will vote third party this year. I've seen a TON of righties going that way, partially thanks to Ron Paul for pointing out some of his party's major problems.
3 - The anti-America/real America works on their hardcore base, but turns off those very important moderate and independent factions. Furthermore, a lot of the more moderate, independent, and intelligent rightists are even supporting Obama, in numbers I have not seen since Clinton, and in fact more than that. Obama's support comes from almost every part of America, and this is quite exciting to see!

Now, all that said, let's get out and vote and not let them steal another one!

4. It's been very ideologically problematic for the GOP.
Romney could have done better, true. McCain couldn't keep the old coalition cobbled together. It'd be like us being forced to rally around a progressive-ACTING Lieberman as a candidate.
