Police: McCain volunteer changes ATM attack story

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh police say a McCain campaign volunteer who said she was held down by a black man who cut the letter "B" in her face has changed her story.

Police spokeswoman Diane Richard says investigators gave the 20-year-old woman a lie-detector test and are "looking at some inconsistencies" in her story.

The student, Ashley Todd, of College Station, Texas, initially said a black man robbed her at knifepoint Wednesday night and then cut her cheek after seeing a McCain sticker on her car.

Police say bank surveillance footage doesn't show her at an ATM where she says she was attacked.

Todd, who is white, now says she was knocked unconscious and doesn't remember being cut. She now says she only discovered the wound later.

No arrests have been made.

Story A: She used ATM, then was robbed of $60, was running away when robber saw McCain bumper sticker and became enraged, punched her in face knocking her down, then sat on her chest and (apparently) gently carved a backwards B in her face.

Story B (after polygraph): She was walking to the ATM when she was hit from behind, was unconcious but remembers being groped, came to and discovered her money missing, drove to nearby friend's house, discovered backwards B carved on face, friend administered first aid, then 45 minutes later called police.

And yes, as I understand police report, there wasn't even video of her using the ATM. Her story probably changed when she was confronted with that. I can't wait for the upcoming third version of her story.

Learning to be a bitch has helped me not get pushed that far -- I know how to make people take me seriously long before I truly lose my temper.

And it seems to me the police gave her every chance in the book to come clean, before considering charges against her.

Now that she is sticking to the story of being attacked, they brought out the video tape, and she is still sticking to it. They could now file charges against her, but I think they are waiting to see if anyone else is involved in this.

Because an act like this 40 or 50 years ago would have an innocent person lynched if a young white woman, said she is a victim and "THOSE people would be guilty".
