Why McCain Has Lost Our Vote by CC Goldwater - Barry's Granddaughter

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Being Barry Goldwater's granddaughter and living in Arizona, one would assume that I would be voting for our state's senator, John McCain. I am still struck by certain 'dyed in the wool' Republicans who are on the fence this election, as it seems like a no-brainer to me.

Myself, along with my siblings and a few cousins, will not be supporting the Republican presidential candidates this year. We believe strongly in what our grandfather stood for: honesty, integrity, and personal freedom, free from political maneuvering and fear tactics. I learned a lot about my grandfather while producing the documentary, Mr. Conservative Goldwater on Goldwater. Our generation of Goldwaters expects government to provide for constitutional protections. We reject the constant intrusion into our personal lives, along with other crucial policy issues of the McCain/Palin ticket.

My grandfather (Paka) would never suggest denying a woman's right to choose. My grandmother co-founded Planned Parenthood in Arizona in the 1930's, a cause my grandfather supported. I'm not sure about how he would feel about marriage rights based on same-sex orientation. I think he would feel that love and respect for ones privacy is what matters most and not the intolerance and poor judgment displayed by McCain over the years. Paka respected our civil liberties and passed on the message that that we should conduct our lives standing up for the basic freedoms we hold so dear.

1. I'd say the Republican party is dead...

All of the descendants of the pillars of the modern Republican party have jumped ship now -- William F. Buckley's son, the Eisenhower grandchildren, and now Goldwater's granddaughter. Ow! That's got to hurt if you're a Republican.

10. Don't forget Ron Reagan Jr.
And probably Patti too, though I don't think she's made any public statement.

11. The Party's over..the world has moved on...

Republicans need to figure that out, and change the party, or they will be out in the wilderness for 40 or 50 years.

6. This is someone that McCain thought he had modeled himself after
This one has to hurt.

I love the last few lines

When you see the candidate's in political ads, you can't help but be reminded of the 1964 presidential campaign of Johnson/Goldwater, the 'origin of spin', that twists the truth and obscures what really matters. Nothing about the Republican ticket offers the hope America needs to regain it's standing in the world, that's why we're going to support Barack Obama. I think that Obama has shown his ability and integrity.

After the last eight years, there's a lot of clean up do. Roll up your sleeves, Senators Obama and Biden, and we Goldwaters will roll ours up with you.

9. As a regular listener to the Stephanie Miller show, this comes as no surprise to me
But I imagine it will to many older Republicans who still remember Barry Goldwater as an "icon" of their party.

19. Here's a trick using Teddy Roosevelt that I think perhaps could wake up some brainwashed Rethugs!
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 11:14 PM by calipendence
If you browse through the internet, there are TONS of quotes from Teddy Roosevelt promoting the welfare of the people, a living wage, and against the unchecked power of corporations.

If we took a whole list of these quotes on a page, and removed all references to Teddy Roosevelt, or parts that place the speaker as Roosevelt, and show them to the Rethug in question. Then simply ask the question...

"Is this person a communist by your standards?"

Then point out to him that he was a notable Republican president of the past, to point out how far the Republican party today has strayed from its own ideals as well as those of the democracy envisioned by the founders of our country.

There are many other quotes we could do the same thing for other Republican presidents like Eisenhower, Lincoln, and others.

Perhaps if these brainwashed nutcases can see how they're concept of what they consider the sliding scale of public opinion and who is "fringe" by their standards is all wacked out, we can start changing some minds out there, we can make a difference.

I heard some quotes that Mark Thompson played back on his Make It Plain show of phone messages left on ACORN's answering machines, and the tenor and absolute propagandized stupidity of these messages was just appalling. Many of these people are nutcases that belong in the insane asylum. But perhaps others can be helped to see the light...

And you know that for Goldwater to appeal to Thom Hartmann to support him during his college years earlier, the man had to have some degree of integrity.
