Powell endorsement already paying off
A former boss of mine who is a very conservative Democrat has been sitting on the fence on who he was going to vote for. He told me this morning that the Powell endorsement helped sway him, he is voting Obama.

3. It's all about the Indies and undecideds at this point...
The Dems are solidly in Obama's camp. McCain has his base (although some
Republicans are said to be crossing over).

This election is all about what the Independents and undecideds will do.

I think Powell helps with the Indies and the undecideds. This is good, because
the Obama camp has said that they fear that undecideds might tend to favor McCain--because
Obama is more unknown. This might keep that from happening.

I'm so happy about the Powell endorsement. We must win this thing.

8. I agree.
I've had to hide a number of the Powell threads. This election is all about winning, and while I don't have any specific anecdotes, I'm pretty sure that his endorsement will play well in Colorado. We actually have more unaffiliated voters than we do registered democrats (not sure about republicans).

I know I made sure that my neighbors across the street knew about the endorsement. They're telling me that they're undecided. I told them about Meet The Press and what struck me more than the endorsement was how Powell made his decision. Hopefully I'm making some progress for Obama with them.

12. Good on you, Gardening Gal...
You are planting seeds in your neighbors, that will hopefully bloom into votes for Obama!

15. Powell appeals to a very important group
These are people who are open at some level to the idea of a black man holding high office, would never go for Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, but have trouble making up their minds about Obama, what with the Hussein, Wright, and Ayres stuff.

Of the remaining undecideds, I believe a very large percentage of them fall into this group. If you had to name one person whose endorsement would make the most difference to the undecideds, I can't think of one that would be more impactful than Powell.

17. Further to that point
What if Nancy Reagan endorsed Obama? That would be strong, but that would hit the GOP base more than the undecideds, I think.

What about Newt Gingrich? I can't see that one. I don't think he has much of a following.

What about Wm. Bennett? That might have a little influence on the undecideds, but I don't see him as nearly the figure as Powell.

What about Rumsfeld? Not at all admired outside the far right. Same with GW Bush.

About the only name I can come up with that would have more impact than Powell is George HW Bush. He won't do it, of course, but if he did, that would immediately end the race.

Any other names that might have more impact on the undecideds than Powell?

9. Well, at least until he apologizes for what he did
Saying that he is exonerated because he did something that worked to our favor is a dangerous kind of pragmatism. Just because his endorsement had a result that you like, doesn't mean he's off the hook for helping to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

He has not apologized for that.

Right now, he's in the position of the Mafia don who donates a million dollars to your church at the same time he's getting high-school kids hooked on drugs. Do you love him for the donation or hate him for hooking kids on drugs? I suppose you could always overlook the drug thing while you count the money.

11. Well that's your opinion, good thing your opinion doesn't mean much
to independents and republicans for Obama.

7. I hope that it sways my neighbor.
One of my neighbors is a conservative (fiscally conservative) gay man who is very involved in local civil rights issues. He had emailed me a few anti-Palin items, so I thought (naturally) that he would be voting for Obama. I know that he hates Bush. I gave him an Obama sign for his yard last week. It was up for four days, then disappeared. I was talking to his neighbors, another gay couple who had just placed an Obama sign in their yard, and I asked if they knew what happened to his sign. They said that he took it down because he was having "second thoughts", then made a "yeah, whatever" expression. "As long as he doesn't vote for McCain"! one added. We can't figure out what was giving him "second thoughts". They asked, but he wouldn't say. It's really been bugging me!
