Old warrior John McCain has survived tougher battles, but none more do-or-die politically than his showdown Wednesday night on Long Island with Democrat Barack Obama.
The final 2008 presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead is McCain's last, best chance to climb out of the hole that the nation's economy and his own faltering campaign have put him in, experts say.

Several GOP strategists said McCain — who last night raised some $7 million for the GOP in Manhattan — should be focusing on the economy and his pro-choice and tax-cutting ideals, not sideshows like Ayers.
"Look,
unless Ayers runs a mutual fund, I don't think most Americans care," said GOP strategist Nelson Warfield. "What they care about is unprecedented turmoil in the markets, and McCain needs to score points on those pocketbook issues."
