A funny story, from here in Super-Blue Davis, for all you Redstaters.
Davis is pretty liberal. We love it here. Great schools and parks, paid for by one of the highest local property tax rates in the state. Money well-spent, by smart people. We have a small problem with right-wingers looking at the state school rankings, buying a house here at 5% over asking, and then promptly trying to vote down the bonds and measures that make it all happen.

Dorks. They tend to be right-wingier than most, 'cause they're TOTALLY outnumbered.

I posted a few days ago that my neighbor had put up a giant 6 x 8 McCain sign on his garage roof; now, it's on his front porch. This is a house full of twenty-year old guys -- one's a plumber, I don't know anything about the others -- they're just ignorant. It's gonna be hard on them to lose this election.

Yesterday, two teenage girls were walking on the other side of the street, one chatting on a cell-phone. I was cleaning up the walkway, when I heard one of them scream: "OH MY GOD! IT'S A GIANT MCCAIN SIGN!!"

They had stopped dead in their tracks, and were staring at the house. The girl on the cell said, "It is, it's a giant McCain sign, I can't believe it. Oh my god!"

They both looked at me. I shrugged, then pretended to throw up, then rolled my eyes. They looked back over at the McCain house. Cars and bicyclists were going by, other pedestrians -- everyone had heard the girl yell --

The girl with the cellphone looked at her friend, then back at the house. She yelled, at the top of her lungs, audible for miles, "YOU SUCK!!". Everyone going by smiled. Some waved.

I don't think anyone was home. But the sign is becoming infamous -- my wife has garnered a lot of sympathy and support after PTA meetings for having to live near such an eyesore.

I love this town.

1. I've spent time in Davis. Nice town.
Portland story: My son was riding the school bus home when the bus passed a newly installed McCain yard sign (more than a rarity here in Portland, where Obama signs/stickers are EVERYWHERE). He said the kids on the bus started pointing and commenting on the sign. "Oh my god -- did you see that?! McCain?! NO WAY! Booooo!" etc.

2. Davis is a great town!
We've been up there a few times...

So many bicyclists!

And the University!

You should post a pic of the infamous sign...

:hi:
