What we are seeing is a group of extreme right wing people, many of whom are "Old Time Religion" who are emboldened to come forward now that Palin is on the ticket since she is "One of Us" type mentality. She is speaking loud and clear to them that "He is not one of Us" and they are no longer hiding in their little caves. Also add fringe racist groups who are probably helping to incite this. This is so public because we have instant communication with the internet and it has gone far enough that finally the media and other Republican are speaking up. The RNC candidates are distancing themselves from McCain/Palin.

The majority of the country is not like this. I have coworkers of many races and who are not happy. One Doc from India called the RNC and told them that there are a lot of people of different races who will never vote for this ticket and they will never vote and Republican with these type of tactics.

I feel that Obama will win this election easily. Our biggest challenge is to prevent the purging of votes like the Bush years.

I know there are many people who are worried and there is a "Light a Candle" site where I go and it helps me. People from 5 different countries candles are lit now so this is an international election. For anyone who is interested it is especially set up for Obama. Even if one is not religious I would think that they believe that good energy can be sent. It's a matter of physics.

And neither do they. What we are seeing now is what's always been there, it's just been subtle -- simmering just under the surface. Fear is what's driving these nuts. And when McCain and Palin give speeches that appeal to these fears, it's like giving them the green light to be full blown with it. It's going to become more blatant the closer we get to the election. But this is nothing compared to how my parents grew up in the segregated south. These people are an embarrassment to this country. This country has been built on the blood, sweat and tears of people of color.

This nation also is shaped by white supremacy and white privilege because of this fact. It also runs on the hubris of those who benefit from white supremacy and white privilege. That will not change until such privileges are entertained and revoked for the whole of society.

When America's "dominant culture" refuses to deal with race on its face and decides to call it "race baiting" instead of confronting it, it is a sheer possibility that there will be folks who are too afraid to face down their prejudices at the ballot box instead of working towards doing the right thing for this country. In fact, they'll be quietly satisfied that they did it in order to keep America "like it is". They join in lockstep with those who "don't want to talk about race" and are uncomfortable when being confronted with their privilege.

In short, racism is not over. It will not be over if(when) Mr. Obama becomes POTUS. It will not be over if McPOW becomes POTUS. It will still be there regardless.

The only thing we have to do is to shine a light upon it and fight it the best we can.

In short, this isn't about what Mr. Obama thinks. He's a brilliant, courageous and wonderful man. He's only one person.

This is a national mindset that has been built over many years by the dominant culture. It won't take one man to change such thinking. Instead, this election might compel many people to question their own racism especially when glimpses of it has been shown on television, the internet and in front of their very faces. It is my hope that the examples that are demonstrated will help people to work toward a more peaceful end in which all races see each other (and their cultures, ethnicities and races) as true equals.

and in the longer run, that would become the view of MOST Americans about Americans today, whether fairly or not.

One issue overlooked is that the media have tried to palm off debates where the polls showed Obama winning as a tie, after ignoring the fact (at the time, when it would have burst Palin's bubble on day 1) that Alaska basically got ALL of the supposedly "no thanx" bridge-to-nowhere money, with greater freedom to spend it (or return it to Alaska taxpayers) than ever. Now the press has delicately buried on the back pages the TOTAL lack of substance to the whole Ayers brouhaha. And you have FOX news, whose viewers nearly 100% support the GOP party lying -- in 04, EVERY other major news outlet reguar watchers showed a CLEAR majority or CLEAR plurality for Kerry.

But racism cannot be dismissed as a factor, especially including the passive acceptance of it, and the liberal fetish of always trying to explain it away.

The McCain campaign has become more appalling than I had even expected, (and I am NOT a dyed in the wool optimist), but also less effective, at least so far.

I have a poll out on what is the likelihood that the W Administration will start some kind of international crisis as a last resort in the election (of course so NOT for that reason ... see above on 'explaining away')
