Obamas a hit at Gore's after partyLater, an Obama motorcade maneuvered up 8th Avenue to Edgehill, west to 21st Avenue South, then left on West End and out to Belle Meade. Along the way, police cars stopped traffic at every driveway and every intersection. Every few blocks, clusters of people gathered to watch the motorcade go by in the rain. The motorcade arrived at the mansion of Former Vice President Al Gore at about 10:20 p.m. In the back of the house, guests - numbering between 300 and 350 - gathered under a plastic tent.
I just want you to know that we are so honored and proud to have Barack and Michelle back here in our home in Nashville. I am so excited about what is lying ahead for our country,” he (Gore) said.
“We can’t take anything for granted. We’ve got a lot of hard work to do, but ladies and gentlemen, I take such pleasure and pride in saying these words: the next president of the United States, Barack Obama.”
Gore added, “and Michelle Obama!” Huge applause and cheers rang out for some time. The Obamas emerged through a flap in the back of the tent and stood onstage alongside the Gores. Obama greeted Tipper with a hug and there were handshakes all around.
.."As Obama talked about how he had admired Al and Tipper Gore from afar for many years, Howard Dean, the Democratic Party chairman, walked in. Obama acknowledged him and Dean joined the Gores and the Obamas on stage.
Later there "were hugs and handshakes all around, as the guests cheered and clapped. Gore then took the microphone, thanked Obama, and announced that $900,000 had been raised."
