So many people thought this would divide our party and make McCain stronger but honestly, I think it's the exact opposite.
First and foremost - it kept our candidates in the limelight up until the conventions. It was the hottest news story going thru the the spring and early summer. And everytime I thought one of our candidates was going to pull it thru, well the results showed otherwise. And while Obama and Hillary were battling to win the nomination on national television, John McCain took a very seriously long nap.
Second - the 'skeletons' were brought out of the closet early. Everything right now that McCain is throwing up against Obama has already been out there for months and throroughly disproved as being bunk. Now I'm not trying to dump on Hillary, her campaign was doing what they had to do (and Obama the same) but ultimately nothing found on either candidate was found to be some deep dark dirty secret. But the thing is, it was out there and all McCain is doing is retreading worn tires. Not going to get him very far.
I watched the same thing unfold in Pennsylvania for the 2002 governors race. Bob Casey Jr. was the assumed nominee but Ed Rendell decided to run against him. Both of them ran a very costly primary season while the republican candidate who was selected early sat at home and watched. Ed Rendell pulled out the upset and the momentum was so heavily in his favor that Rendell won by a landslide.
The primaries were costly but worked in our favor. Obama was well known by the public and the 'dirt' was already exposed. Perhaps it's a good thing we let these primaries play themselves out instead of cutting them off early.
