Quiz: McCain and Forrestal

John McCain served on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal. (That's the one that had the big fire.)

John McCain is a very different person than the carrier's namesake, James Forrestal, the first Secretary of Defense. They share some surface similarities, like naval careers and being Irish, but, unlike McCain, James Forrestal was a Democrat and was closely associated with a war we won. (WWII) Forrestal was not a glory-seeker. He kept a low profile, yet was hated by the press. (Maybe because he kept a low profile.) He was also involved in one of the most pro-diplomacy moves ever, pressing for a negotiated peace with Japan pre-Hiroshima. (To free up our forces to restrain Russia.)

No matter their differences, however, the two men share one striking trait. (That gets more noticeable every day.)

4. I heard that too

It wasn't clear in the Rolling Stone article, but I heard from something my mom read that he was screwing around when he started the fire. Then he didn't help pull men out of the fire, or do much of anything except watch from a distance. What a rat-bastard!
