If he had publicly and firmly repudiated these calls to violence, he might have gained some points with some people for having integrity; it would have been consistent with his now long-lost call to conduct a civil campaign. But no, he fears offending a few people, so he remains silent, when surely his inner voice is telling him that the right thing to do would be to speak out against it.
