He was a registered member of the Alaska Independence Party until 2002 (might be off a year or two). It is a legitimate political party in Alaska (I think the governor a few terms back was from the AIP), but one of its core issues is having a referendum in Alaska to decide whether to secede from the United States.
It's not really a militia per se, though the founder of the party was apparently murdered in a black market plastic explosives deal gone wrong. His body wasn't found until some years later, at which time he was reburied in Canada, because he didn't want to be buried under the "damn flag" of the United States.
So, you're mistaken on some of the fine details, but yes, she has five children with a man who was just a few years ago a registered member of a group that advocates seceding from the United States. (And she delivered a recorded address to the AIP's convention earlier this year saying she supported all the "great work" that they do.) Talk about "turning your back on America"!
