I used to be a tech support guy for an ISP I will not name.

It was during the old days of dialup. We would lose customers to AOL because the AOL kit was really as easy as 1-2-3, since it is self-contained.

Back in the days of Windows 95, and even 3.1 (I remember helping people still on 3.1 in 2000), you needed to access the Internet using network neighborhood and the TCP/IP protocol, which you had to fetch on your Windows install CD.

Well, for some, it was waaaay too hard. They had to enter IP addresses sometimes, do a couple things that were so/so technical, but if you went by the numbers, you were fine.

Some 1% of our users had a bad version of Windows or did not have the CD (lost, bootleg, never had it), so they were legitimately hosed and for them, AOL was the only solution (because it was self-contained).

But many other users could not go through the easy 1-2-3 steps and AOL got these lazy idiots, ready to pay more money for less (because AOL is not an ISP, it's an online service with a gateway to a few of the services of the Internet).

Nowadays, if a user still has AOL, in most cases, he is either an idiot or a rural who lives in an area where there is nothing else.

Forget about AOL. It's the Faux News of the ISPs. I would just ignore them, because they are not going to switch for Obama through the magic of an online poll.
