Palin's "May I call you Joe" schtick was a setup for her zingers.
I haven't seen this posted here, and I'll give credit where I found it--a poster on Ebert's blog.

By asking (and receiving, audibly) permission to call him Joe was the setup she needed for her "say it ain't so, Joe" attempted zinger.

Craven, tacky, sneaky, soulless.

1. No, you can call me 'The Esteemed Senior Senator from Delaware'...
That is what I would have said.

2. and it was said loud enough for the mics to hear it
if you notice, when Biden was telling her she could, his voice was noticably lower.

3. It has been discussed here too.....
cause it was so obvious.

She never called him Joe, although she asked for it.....as soon as she opened her mouth.

It was fake, phony and forced.

7. She called him Joe in that attack line.
I saw it discussed here (and how distasteful it was)--I just hadn't made the connection WHY she asked him.

10. Oh, I completely agree that it bombed.
I just find the whole thing considerably more craven now. Lightbulb moment.

15. She was also hoping that he would naturally call her Sarah
and that that wouldn't sound respectful enough. I was so glad that he kept calling her Governor.
