The ONLY Strategy Left to McCain
The McCain campaign is in deep trouble. He's falling further and further behind in the polls and there's little he can do to shake up the current narrative.

HE has to go completely on the defense.

Remember, George Bush won in 2004, so KErry vs. Bush states are an important factor here.

He must first pull out of every last Kerry state save one. He has to give at least the appearance of taking the fight to Obama or else his base will be demoralized, thus he must go on the attack in one Kerry state. The most likely candidate for that slot would be Pennsylvania, though Wisconsin may be another likely choice. His money is limited, so he must concentrate his resources in the more rural areas of PA.

From there, he must go on an all out defensive play in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana, Missouri, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada. He must accept Iowa as a lost cause. HE can afford to lose one of the Western states and still win.

Anything short of this is a majorly losing strategy for John McCain in the final month of the campaign.

If I were a gambling man, I'd bet on McCain ignoring the only potential strategy left open to him. He will continue to be scattered, which plays further into Obama's strategy of expanding the battleground states and widening the electoral map.

1. He will get very very nasty now..
he'll go for a culture war now, it's what repubs do when they're in a corner. Look for a Willie Horton style ad coming to televisions near you.

2. Not good enough
McCain is behind by at least five points nationally. That translates to losing ALL the battleground states. All of them. It will be impossible for McCain to win without somehow catching up to Obama nationally.

9. I'm not worried about it at all
McCain is MAvericky and wants to keep rolling those dice by going after Maine, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Iowa.

Which explains the "you betcha's" all night last night.

8. I agree, he has to play defense
He'll try to compete in a state or two, maybe New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. The rest of his strategy is to maintain the 2004 electoral results.
