http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081003/COL33/810030433So Sarah Palin didn't indulge the critics' lowest expectations in her Thursday night debate with Joe Biden. She didn't stumble or stammer, commit any awful gaffes or make a fool of herself.
But it's only by the shallowest of standards that her performance could be called creditable or impressive.
Palin surfed through the questions by skimming over the topics, offering little in the way of depth, context or understanding. When she was asked for substance, she too often respond with clichés. When she was asked something directly, she too often dodged with a change of subject.
If Thursday's debate was Palin's chance to show that she could share the stage with Biden, I suppose she succeeded, at least nominally. But if the debate was an opportunity for Palin to build confidence that she is a serious and thoughtful, candidate for the second-highest office in the nation, she failed badly.
I understand it's not exactly fair to Palin to make the night entirely about her readiness. It was, after all, a debate with two participants.
But without question, Palin was the one with the serious hurdles to clear, the doubts to clear up.

This is about how I saw it. She avoided answers. She gave her memorized talking points, and once she had exhausted her talking point, she would move on to her next talking point, regardless of the appropriateness. She was answering questions before the subject was up, and her wink was repulsive.
Biden had to play the role of "the correcter" all night. He did a fine job. When he would correct her and send it back, she would look stunned, say, "Um..." and then plow on to another talking point, ignoring Bidens point entirely. It was like she never heard a thing. But, she made sentences, so she exceeded expectations.
She is unqualified, untested and not ready for VP.
