"Heck" and "Hell" are not words I like my child to hear or say..
My son developed this habit from his friend of saying "Heck No".. It sounds wrong coming out of a 3yr old. We've told him its not a nice word, it sounds trashy... Everytime Sarah speaks she says heck... and there's been more than once she's used Hell.. as in "Hell bent".

I'm not a prude, but seriously, her mouth is causing problems with me disciplining him on the use of "heck". When he hears it on the t.v. from a news program, its pretty sad.

a few potty words myself... but I don't think a public candidate should speak so trashy.

26. your son is three years old, too young to be in school.
So the situation you posit is unlikely at present; I agree that it's not an ideal response to a parent, teacher, or other authority figure, but in casual conversation with peers and playmates is another matter. (Which is something most people catch on to, anyway; employing a different manner of speaking, different level of formality, etc is a linguistic phenomenon known as 'code-switching' and develops with the knowledge of situationally appropriate modes of expression).

7. Watch the news after he goes to bed
That's what I do with my two year old. There's no need to expose them to the trash that comes out of everybody's mouth. Until he goes to bed the television only plays very carefully selected children's programming.

And I have a DVR, so whatever shows I want to watch after he goes to bed are recorded.

He knows damn well it is a cat and also something vulgar.

I told him exactly what it means, why it is vulgar and then mom chimed in and threatened his life if he ever was caught saying that word. (She's an inner city middle school teacher...she even scares me when she goes into teacher mode.)

We don't sugar-coat anything with the ten year old.

It's the same reason many consider "dang" to be as bad as "damn" It's not what they say, it's the intent behind the words.

That said, make sure you don't let the little tyke watch the next presidential debate. I have a feeling McCain is going to snap and swear live on TV.

I hope so anyway. :D

29. Oh no.. He'd be asleep by 9pm...
I guess its her over all aura... she's not an intellect. she tries, but it doesn't work... and I want my child to understand what he says and why he's saying it... I don't want him to repeat words just because.. I want him to think about the way he speaks to people and the intention he has behind them... How to speak to his teacher or friends or family.. Its important.. not so much the actual words at times, but the understanding of how to use them... Obama has proven how to use words and weigh their worth in his language... Its obvious she has no value for what comes out of her mouth or what it sounds like when she does.

I would think that bad language is not the only unfortunate lesson she's teaching him.

And, despite the slack you're getting from other posters, I recognize your right to raise your son how you like and commend you on how closely you seem to be monitoring his development. I doubt Palin's kids were so lucky to have a mom like you.

Some will accuse you of being a strict prude, while having no problems railing about how bratty, out-of-control and disrespectful kids are in restaurants and on airplanes, and complaining about their irresponsible parents.

Do what is best for you and your child.

(For the record, I agree with you. I can't listen to Stephanie Miller on the radio (podcast for later) because I don't want my 3 year old listening to some of the colorful language.)

44. actually, the NO could be called rude, but this is a 3 yr old. The 3 year old is all about
boundaries and stepping OVER them, even leaping.

NO and all its incarnations, adjectives or none, is the favorite word of the 3 year old. Later it is WHY?

This is something you will have to really consistently and gently remind him of every single time, because that is the 3 year old mind.
And of course don't let him catch you using it either.

OTOH, there is the school of thought that by ignoring it it will lose its glamour for him and he will be on to the next new thing in his life....

Remember Red Skelton's bad little boy?

"if I do'ed it, I get a whippin'"

"I DO'ED it!!!!"

Not going to get into semantics over whether Heck is acceptable, vs other words..these are your choices, and you are the mom.

I bet he is a cutie pie too.

Thinking of my youngest sister,at around age 2, pointing at my dad at supper and emitting a mouthful of what he thought was gibberish, he is laughing at her because she is so cute, and making conversational remarks to her.....those of us who were with her all day knew she was telling him to "Shut UP"(this was her New Word of the Week), which was absolutely forbidden for us to say (the older kids I mean) So we told him she was telling him to shut up and he turned into Ogre Dad so fast we nearly killed ourselves laughing at HIM. Poor guy, Mom, Me and the Middle Kid, all in the floor screaming over him not being able to speak Baby Martian. Of course he got the joke too and stopped..it was a hilarious Family Moment.

31. I've often wondered what it takes for a word to become a swear word (warning: cursing)
Now I can understand words like "nigger," "cunt," and "fag" being verboten because they're attacks on a person's innate characteristics - race, gender, and sexuality - but why does "damn" get special consideration and "dog" doesn't?

It's like a holdover from the Dark Ages when certain words were considered magical. Will these words lose their potency over time like "poppycock" and "humbug" did?
