***Happy Birthday, President Carter!***

Please take a momentary break from your discussions of polls, debates, and bailouts to show this superb statesman some DU love. He turned 84 today.

On edit, please help keep this thread kicked so more people can see it. Thanks!

1. The most underrated President of modern times.
His legacy grows in stature with every passing year. Carter's only mistake was seeing the future clearly and being too far ahead of his time.

Happy Birthday, Mr. President! May you have many more.

3. Yes, I agree he is under-rated, but he was a very bad leader.
People wouldn't follow him anywhere.

He told people what they needed to hear, not what they wanted to hear. He had no gift of gab or jawboning talent whatsoever.

Like Hoover, he is a good man, highly intelligent and in the wrong time at the wrong place. Perhaps we shouldn't have engineers as presidents.

6. He certainly wasn't a sound-bite politician.
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 02:20 PM by Kutjara
Which is why St. Ronnie walked over him so easily. Carter was all substance and no style while Raygun was the polar opposite.

I've always had a warm spot for Carter, precisely because he was a straight-arrow. He told it like it was, and didn't sugar coat it for public consumption. He treated the American public like adults. Perhaps that was his real mistake.

Maybe because I work in engineering, I find it refreshing to hear someone tell the unvarnished truth, free of spin and ass-covering. Smarmy politicians instantly trigger my BS meter.

12. I agree. It's funny, my dad was a submarine captain and he and my mother...
voted for Ford in '76 because they didn't like the narrow-minded thinking that Adm. Rickover looked for in his nuke officers. They were not good at improvisation and did not get on well with sailors to the degree other naval officers did.

Those traits got him into trouble as president.

A good man, indeed.

4. Cheers to President Carter!
One of the most decent men to ever hold that high office. Whatever his mistakes, when shown in the light of those who followed him he proves to be precient, wise and extremely moral.

May our next President have even half of these qualities and we will be well served.

5. Best Wishes President Carter
He was governor of GA when I worked for the state back in the 70s. Then in 2000 I met him at a book signing and told him he once signed my paychecks when he was governor. He took the time to chat with me, asked where I worked in GA, was very pleasant. Just a wonderful human being. Happy Birthday PC!

10. He beat a distant relative of mine for the Democratic nomination for Governor.
How distant, I don't know, I don't even know his name. All I know is he wanted to appoint my Grandfather to head the Dept. of Corrections if Elected. Grandpa, who lived in CA was not thrilled at the prospect.

27. I'm sure your Grandfather
was a very fine man. Carter put some extraordinary people in positions of power in the state while he was governor. The person who ran the agency I worked for was a political appointee, and was one of the finest men I knew at the time, both professionally and in character. Of course, I was very young then..... :hi:

16. In 1979, he said
the US could be energy independent by 2000! Think of that. EIGHT years ago - before 9/11 - before either *. Imagine what could have been accomplished, how much stronger the economy would be.

Think how far ahead this country would be if we had paid attention to what Carter was saying back in the 1970s about alternative energy and energy independence.

President Carter is a man ahead of his time.

Jimmy was right about that. He was right about energy. He was right about how to be an actual Christian in office, and not just pretend to be. And more recently, he was right about the dangerous direction this country has taken in this decade.

God Bless you James Earl Carter. And many more happy B-days to you!!! :toast: :bounce:

Too bad you're not spending it in Afghanistan with the millions of women that you and Brezinski condemned to the tyranny of your anti-progressive Mujahideen buddies. Reagan may have been Rambo, but your administration, sadly, wrote the script. You did kick his ass at domestic policy though.
