Did someone hack into fivethiryeight.com??
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/
I'm only getting a Google page when I check it. Is this happening to anybody else??

It's weird cuz the guy from this site was on KO tonite, basing his current projection of a BIG Obama win, with something like 5:1 odds.

and now I can't get the site to come up.

Coincidence, or not? Hmmm.... What's going on???

1. I was on it half an hour ago, but it gives me a Google page now.
Maybe they are doing something to it? I don't know.

But by all means leap to the most extreme possible explanation when given the world's smallest amount of reason.

EDIT: Did it occur to you, for example, that maybe the site is getting a lot of hits because he was just on the teevee?

7. I've never seen that happen to any site...
I'd get a "server busy" message, but not be sent to Google.

Odd, too, that it works for some of you, but not for me or the poster.

I don't know why it is...

14. (shrug) Could be the person's default search page is set thus-and-so...
Or a variety of other reasons. None but the least likely having anything to do with hacking. Despite how sensational it sounds.

23. I don't think it's hacking, but the isp could be redirecting.
I've got fivethirtyeight pages in my history that now take me to Google.

I've tried it in Firefox and Safari, and still get the Google.

28. And the URL displayed is "www.fivethirtyeight.com", not "www.google.com"
So it's not a redirect of the sort I'm used to.

What's weirder still is that some members aren't having the problem.

I agree it's weird that some members aren't having this problem.

I'm sure you're right and they're getting a lot of hits, but why a Google page?
that seems a bit odd.

Strangely, when I entered "fivethirtyeight" on the google page that came up, it ACTUALLY came up....once.

and then it went back to Google page. Weird.

30. sorry.......
For example, you can set up any website so that if someone types in www.barackobama.com it will actually take you to www.ournextpresident.com .... this is fairly common and is set up by sites that have multiple domain names but they want them to all forward to one main site.

So if someone gained access to fivehthirtyeight.com's account and changed the instruction (so to speak) then when we type in the URL, it will automatically go to Google.

But that begs my question .... if you're gonna hack into something, why send folks to somewhere harmless?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=+site:fivethirtyeight.com+fivethirtyeight.com&sa=X&oi=smap&resnum=1&ct=more-results

they are "not found on this server."

My theory is the host server got overloaded from too much traffic. So this Google redirection is a ..... ya know ....... circuit breaker thingy.

If you use Explorer, go to "tools" then "internet options" then under "browsing history" click "settings" if unless you have "every time I visit a webpage" checked, then your pages are cached and you're not getting the most up to date stuff.

Entirely diffent thing. That means that a domain can't be transferred without the owner's permission.

The problem is with Blogger.com hosting. Blogger.com is owned by Google. Blogger.com has got a bug or some shit going on.

I was reading there a few minutes ago, but returned to DU, and now this is going on. I'm sure it will be fixed by mid-morning at the latest, and that assumes the site's main administrators have gone to bed now and normally sleep nights. (If they don't sleep nights, it will be fixed sooner.)
