An open apology to Katie Couric
Dear lady, I am truly sorry for all of those times I mocked your "Navy Seals rock!" exclamation

That is all,
mitchum

1. I hear you - but it's a sad commentary on the state of journalism in America
when we take notice of and applaud a media person for just asking ordinary questions that any candidate for high office should have to answer.

2. There's one thing that can be said for Palin ...

She makes people like Couric seem like journalists, and she makes Bush seem compassionate, even intelligent. I don't know if that's necessarily a mark in her favor, but it's something.

I had this friend who for most of his 20s weighed in excess of 500 pounds. I've always been of positively average build. He was also a musician of sorts and had a decent voice. I liked to dabble with the guitar, but was horrible at it. We used to joke around that the only reason I hung out with him was because he made me look positively well-built by comparison. He'd shoot back that he hung around with me 'cause when I played, it made him seem like Eric Clapton.

Palin is like that.

Couric has still thrown her softball questions that anyone running for high office should be able to tackle with a least an intelligent *sounding* answer. That question that's making the rounds today about a father raping her daughter? Same question was asked at a debate in Alaska. Same damn question. Everyone knew how she'd answer it. She was prepared for it. She gave her standard answer, and yeah, that standard answer comes off as totally nuts to thinking people, but Palin isn't really trying to impress thinking people at this point.

So, I don't really give Couric props for that.

5. what's wrong with asking basic questions?
There is absolutely no reason to expect Couric to ask hyper aggressive questions as if she were one of us.

I expected her to ask fair, basic questions and she's done it and she has pressed Palin when she's tried to BS her way through an answer and that has given us the wealth of comedy gold that we've gotten.

Couric did a good job. That deserves kudos, unbegrudgingly

7. Plus the look of disdain in Couric's eyes when she has to repeat the question
And hear a stupid answer or evasion is priceless.

10. Couric has been competent ...

But her subject matter has made her look like a tough-as-nails reporter.

There's nothing specifically wrong with asking basic questions, but don't ask me to think highly of a talking head because they do it. Anyone can ask basic questions.

That Palin is making herself look like a complete fool by answering those basic questions is no true reflection on Couric's ability.

3. I think they picked her based on her terrible performance to date
It's not like Couric did a lot it's just real hard to make this stuff look good. Even Hannity couldn't do it.

9. Hannity probably would've asked questions like..
"John McCain is a proven maverick in the senate. Do you think he will continue to be in the White House?"

Which wouldn't have made the segment even an interview, it would be a propaganda piece. Couric asked her questions that just marginally make the cut for journalistic merit and Palin couldn't even answer them.

8. Umm I'm not apologizing to Katie Couric, she didn't ask Palin any hard hitting questions
She asked her simple straightforward questions and Palin was too fucking stupid to answer them. I'll give CBS some credit for airing the whole interview, though. God knows Faux would have just stuck most of it in a drawer.

11. Katie's still a blithering idiot. She just has the good fortune of interviewing someone stupider...
than she is, so she looks like a genius by comparison.

Given the nature of the American public however, Couric's uncanny ability to shoot fish in barrels with a shotgun will almost certainly be enough to revive her career.

12. I don't regret anything I've called Katie Couric on
prior to this because she needs to be held accountable.

But, I will give her props now for asking some tough questions from the one who does not do interviews except Charlie and Katie..Ooooops.
