Obama: ‘It is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once.’»

Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) just gave a press conference responding to Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) suggestion that they both suspend their campaigns, postpone Friday’s debate in Mississippi, and return to Washington to deal with the financial crisis. Obama said that he would like to the debate to go forward as planned because “it is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once”:

With respect to the debates, it’s my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess. And I think that it is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once. I think there’s no reason why we can’t be constructive in helping to solve this problem and also tell the American people what we believe and where we stand and where we want to take the country.

Watch it at link~

Earlier, Matt Yglesias made a similar point: “Meanwhile, I think walking and chewing gum at the same time is part of the president’s job.”

1. Damn. Nail in the coffin, IMO.
How can gramps come back from this? BTW, I am still trying to catch up. I just got back to school. What did mcPOW say, did he "suspend" his campaign? He wants a delay on the debate? That make no sense.

4. After a 10 day lapse since the financial crisis was announced,
NOW McCain has suspended his campaign because he thinks his economic expertise  is required in DC, a place he's avoided like the plague for many months. You can't make it up!

9. you know, you gotta wonder what he's been smoking.........
he's already said the economy is not his strongest issue! What kind of expertise would he provide if he doesn't know anything about it?

10. What a collosal fuck up by McCain's campaign
Decades from now political scientists will be teaching courses on this period and they'll refer to McCain's 2008 run as the "Gimmick Campaign."

13. Best quote of the day.
And IMO he should take questions from the press everyday up until election day. Every time he does it he looks more Presidential. There's no way McLame can do that and if he tries, he'll break.

He hit McCain in the gut numerous times during that Q&A. I was stunned at how masterfully he jabbed to the body and then went in for the K.O.

25. I was just blogging about that point..
In the second week of a disasterous economic crisis, John McCain just announced he will suspend campaigning and wants to postpone the first presidential debate that is scheduled for 48 hours from now, to come to Washington and work on the bailout.

Last week, McCain said the fundamentals of the economy are strong.

Later, he explained that he was talking about the American workforce. He was all over the map last week, seemingly flailing and lashing out at SEC chairman Chris Cox and wanting to fire the head of the "FEC". (Oops)

What he didn't do was rush to Washington and suspend his campaign. Last night's ABC/WP poll showing he was diving among likely voters may be a factor in his sudden decision today.

If he wants to be POTUS, how does this reflect on McCain's handling the serious issues of the office?

Will the world only hand him one crisis at a time?

Obama hit the nail on the head.

Unfortunately, if he doesn't pull his ads and McCancel does, then Obama might take a hit for it. McCain is trying to neutralize Obama's fundraising advantage.

32. He should say...
...since the economy is on the minds of every American right now, and usually at the top of their priority list, the debate this Friday should instead focus on our economy :) Or at least make it half and half. That would really take the wind out of the sails of the McCain campaign, forcing him to talk about something "he knows nothing about" instead of his beloved national security.
