You Can Put Lipstick on a Right Wing Extremist, But Sarah Palin is STILL Cotton Mather in a Skirt

I. Cotton Mather in a Skirt

Cotton Mather, infamous puritan minister who believed in the good old fashioned American value of witch hunts. Keep the people scared and you can keep them pliable. Purge the weak, poor, outspoken, and you can keep everyone else in line.

Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen to be John McCain’s running mate on the eve of the Republican primary, because she appeals to the reactionary wing of the party. She was able to keep the base from spitting in their nominee’s face during their convention. They ate up her no abortion, no way, no how stance, her no action on health care as governor, her creationism in public schools, her global warming is part of God’s plan and all of her other whacko right wing views.

However, after the party was over, McCain had a problem. Palin was just a 72 year old cholesterol laden heart beat away from the presidency----if the nation elected John McCain. And she held opinions which were embraced by a tiny minority of Americans (from 10-20% of the most right wing U.S. citizens if you read my last journal in which I compare her values with numbers derived from public opinion polls). With his history of facial melanoma with local metastases, McCain’s health was even more uncertain. Add in his obvious mental decline, and his VP needed to be of prime presidential quality.

Palin might be presidential quality----in Pakistan or Burma or some other uber right wing country. In the United States, she is much too extreme to appeal to the mainstream. Something had to be done to change the right of right wing Palin from the Republican Convention into a Hillary Clinton clone.

Palin had to start lying.

II. Big Lies

Karl Rove is now working for John McCain. We know this, because of an article in The Hill

http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/eight-years-after-s.c.-karl-rove-works-with-sen.-mccains-camp-2008-09-08_2.html

Karl Rove’s number one claim to fame in United State’s politics is that he is a magpie who appropriates other, more creative political strategists’ material and makes it his own. If something works for him once, he uses it again. And again. And again. He is sort of like the Terminator, except presumably the Terminator is programmed to stop using one tactic if it stops working and try another. Karl Rove does not like to let go of his tried and true methods, even if circumstances change. For example, since running on a campaign of Fear and Terror worked so well for the 2002 midterms, he tried the same thing for the 2006 midterms, forgetting that in 2002, he had a lockdown on the MSM, something he did not have in 2006. It is impossible to maintain fear and terror in a population if the press is not 100% on your side, since scared people will just naturally keep turning the channel until they find the newscaster who will reassure them that the terror warning is a bunch of political hooey, designed to influence their vote in the fall.

Karl Rove is making mistakes this time, too. I will talk about them after the election.

One of Rove’s signature tactics is the Big Lie, straight out of Nazi propaganda.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Lie

]His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.

“He” is Hitler as described by the U.S…..but they could have been describing Rove, too.

So, when I see Sarah Palin going out day after day telling some real whoppers, I know that Karl Rove must be there behind the scenes egging her own. It’s ok. Keep repeating it. Sooner or later, they’ll have to start believing you. No one would tell that many lies.

III. First Big Lie: Palin DID Make Women in Wasilla Pay For Their Own Rape Exam Kits

Wow. Just wow. I can see why Palin felt the need to lie about this one. Even the right wing is not going to take kindly to making women who have just been sexually assaulted fork up $1000 bucks to pay for the kit that is used to gather forensic evidence to prosecute predators. I mean, do we make victims of burglary and assault and murder pay for the forensics? What kind of law and order mayor lets rapists walk away because their victim does not have $1000 to pay so that criminal evidence can be gathered.

Obviously, the kind of mayor who believes that any woman who is raped needs to keep her mouth shut and pretend that it did not happen.

Here is the article from today’s Huffington Post.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jacob-alperinsheriff/sarah-palin-instituted-ra_b_125833.html

Although Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella wrote USA Today earlier this week that the GOP vice presidential nominee "does not believe, nor has she ever believed, that rape victims should have to pay for an evidence-gathering test...To suggest otherwise is a deliberate misrepresentation of her commitment to supporting victims and bringing violent criminals to justice," Palin, as mayor, fired police chief Irl Stambaugh and replaced him with Charlie Fannon, who with Palin's knowledge, slashed the budget for the exams and began charging the city's victims of sexual assault. The city budget documents demonstrate Palin read and signed off on the new budget. A year later, alarmed Alaska lawmakers passed legislation outlawing the practice.

IV. Palin Chooses to Lie on CHOICE

At the convention, everyone knew where Palin stood on the issue of abortion. She was against it. Even if you were under aged and your father raped you, you would still be forced to carry and give birth to that child. (And pay for the $1000 rape kit?)

http://www.newshoggers.com/blog/2008/09/palin-anti-abor.html

In November 2006, then gubernatorial candidate Sarah Palin declared that she would not support an abortion for her own daughter even if she had been raped.
Granting exceptions only if the mother's life was in danger, Palin said that when it came to her daughter, "I would choose life."

Here is a video of Palin (running for governor) saying that she would support an Alaskan Constitutional amendment banning all abortion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEN-c0zRH1c&feature=related

As I pointed out in my last journal, this is an extremely right wing fringe position in this country, held by only a tiny minority of citizens. Therefore, it is no wonder that Palin lied and changed her long held views when she was interviewed on ABC exactly as I predicted she would when she was wooing the GOP during the convention. .

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/Story?id=5789483&page=2

Now, suddenly abortion is a “states rights” issue for her. But only on national television (not in front of conservative Republicans). This is called trying to have it both ways. She wants the Right-to-Life wing of the Republican Party to vote for McCain in hopes that he will listen to her and select a couple of more Scalias to overturn Roe v. Wade. And she wants moderate Americans to believe that she has just been kidding all these years when she championed Constitutional Amendments that would forever deprive women of their choice in a state so far from the next U.S. state that women really wouldn’t have any alternative besides a back alley abortion.

So, when were you lying, governor? All those years in Alaska? Or now?

V. What Other Nationally Know Politician Has Gotten Us Into a Mess of Trouble With His Lies?

I have not even mentioned some of Palin’s better known lies. The whopper about how she said “No, thank you” to the Bridge to Nowhere and the lies she told in conjunction with Troopergate. This woman was probably picked, because her training as a television sports announcer has equipped her to lie almost as effectively as Tony Snow used to lie for the Bush White House.

I am sure that Rove could not believe his luck when he found a replacement for his beloved W., a woman who could lie almost as well as Shrub. Remember how Bush lied in his debate with Gore, claiming that he supported the Texas Patient Protection Act, which put a rein on HMO excesses? Since the press was not fact checking anything that Bush said, they did not tell people that Gov. Bush actually vetoed the first bill and when the legislature passed it again two years later, he let it go into law without signing it. One of the first things he did as president was have John Ashcroft’s DOJ take that same Texas Patient Protection Act to court for the insurance companies and destroy it (after he bragged about it on the debates!). So, his actions predicted what he would do. But his lie allowed him to fool a bunch of people.

That is what Rove is trying to do with Cotton Mather in a dress---who is also George W. Bush in a dress. Transform an uber right wing, reactionary, evangelical, global warming denier, oil industry bought and paid for , polar bear extinction applauding candidate with no qualifications into a friendly face that people look at and say “She ain’t too bright, but she means well. I reckon she’ll do.”

Do what? If you want to know the answer, you need to look beyond the last five minutes of the song and dance her handlers are putting on, because all the answers are there, in everything she has said and done during her career in Alaska. There is a wealth of material. Video of Palin espousing views that will scare the socks of mainstream America---as long as they get a chance to see it. No one wants their libraries purged. No one wants their daughter to be treated like a tainted woman when she goes to the police after a rape. People do want health care solutions---and yet, in a state wealthy enough to hand out $1000 checks to everyone each month, Palin did jack about the health care crisis after promising to address it when she was campaigning .

It may be true that you can fool some of the people all of the time, but after seven years of Bush lies....

2. KandR
Always excellent posts with facts.

Her church is on a mission to drive out demons...witch hunting, and the MSM won't touch it. One question about the Iraq occupation being a mission from God, and that was it. The MSM was all over Rev. Wright, but no one will touch her freaked out pastor/church. She continues to spew the same lies and no one cares....
This is all very frightening....

peace~

4. Two differences:
Palin is white, and Republican. You know perfectly well that white Republicans are not held to the same ethical standards that Barack has been held to. Heck, Barack is held to be responsible for things casual acquaintances of his did or said years before he met them, but Sarah isn't being held responsible for things she herself has done and said.

5. Mr Mather wasn't nearly as bad as Palin
For one thing, he was, for all his failings, a great intellect whose love of science earned his admission to the Royal Society. Palin does not seem to have anything akin to an intellect and her hatred of science borders on pathological.

6. Have to add this detail from Salon. Palin forced women in Alaska to fly to Seattle for abortions.
Here is the story.

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/09/15/bess/index1.html

In 1996, evangelical churches mounted a vigorous campaign to take over the local hospital's community board and ban abortion from the valley. When they succeeded, Bess and Dr. Susan Lemagie, a Palmer OB-GYN, fought back, filing suit on behalf of a local woman who had been forced to travel to Seattle for an abortion. The case was finally decided by the Alaska Supreme Court, which ruled that the hospital must provide valley women with the abortion option.

At one point during the hospital battle, passions ran so hot that local antiabortion activists organized a boisterous picket line outside Dr. Lemagie's office, in an unassuming professional building across from Palmer's Little League field. According to Bess and another community activist, among the protesters trying to disrupt the physician's practice that day was Sarah Palin.

So, the next time someone tells you "It's ok. Palin didn't actually take away women's choice when she was governor" tell them "She took away women's choice before she was governor and made them go to Washington state." That is what kind of candidate she is.
