High School bully lines are not going to win the game for us.
Obama is sounding like a democratic version of GWB. Lipstick on a pig? Please. Someone needs to sit him down and have a talk with him. We, Dems, don't need school yard bully tactics. We have honest issues to stand on and Obama is not standing up for them. :wtf:

Pissed or not, a presidential figure should not resort to the sophomoric behavior that Obama is displaying. Someone, please, talk to the man, or we'll be dealing will a McCain/Palin presidency for the next 4 to 8 years.

I know it's not popular to say something like this - but I can't help it. It is the truth.

Sorry, but your lambs to the slaughter attitude is a loser
Believe what you want, but lying down and playing nice for the Repugs gets you beat every time. Obama was tough today. Sorry if toughness offends you, but some of us don't want to see a new war in Iran and continued destruction of the middle class.

91. Which is precisely why I lay off this stuff
"...the equivalent of the repugs?"

Which is precisely why I lay off this stuff. Although I realize that both sides have their fair share of individuals with a bottom-feeding, "win-at-any-cost" mentality, and believe pandering to the lowest common denominator makes or breaks a campaign, I myself believe that integrity and honor on both a personal and a political level (e.g., Jimmy Carter's win in '76 or Kennedy's in '60) is more valuable to ourselves and our party in both the long run and the short run.

That I'm associated with the Leech Strategy by proxy saddens me to a degree, as I feel that the longer we continue with this Win-At-All-Cost strategy, we'll be forced to see the enemy in our very own mirror.

That I don't believe playing dirty will either win or lose the election for the Dems puts me in a minority-- but that same isolation often happens when we prioritize our integrity and honor over that of playing the game dirty.

It's tough to argue this kind of thing with people who believe "OMG! playing nice cost us the elections!!1!" and subscribe to the simplistic post-hoc-ergo-prompter-hoc fallacy. My suggestion to you would be simply to hold onto your integrity, but don't waste your time with those who are willing to throw theirs away.

Something I haven't done since back in January sometime. I've stayed out of the mud slinging for good reason but broke my own rule last night in a moment of weakness. It is unfortunate that an open discussion is no longer possible. Though, I have to admit, I could have couched my position in gentler terms. I appreciate your feedback.

said, "If you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as."

He got the word out to the fundies about the daughters disgusting behavior in a smooth way. Obama did the same thing, He can even say it wasn't intentional now, but the word is still out about Palin being a pig.

Like Lakoff says, you have to frame the debate.

Kerry comparisons. No, I am not a whiner, attention seeker, or a concern troll, but as everyone has said. The big difference is that Obama has Democrats standing with him and unified more than before.

Neither Kerry or Gore got as much Dem surrogate support as Obama is getting. It is because we are in the middle of war, natural disasters, and economic hardship (economy, foreclosure, you name it). People were not ready in 2004, nor 2000. 2008 has awaken many people who agree with us and Obama that "Eight is Enough" period.

That said, I disagree with this particular OP. Obama is not being a bully. Obama is taking some scurrilous hits and for that the media is calling him a wimp. He needs to hit back, and this particular phrase that he used is red meat to most of us who are tired of McCain trying to paint himself as a maverick when he clearly intends to continue bush* policies.

I've obviously never had the shit kicked out of me for being nice, because you say so. Oh, ok. Life's been good. Life's been grand. And consequently, I've learned nothing and know nothing about real life. Thanks for the tip. I'll try to be more grateful in the future and keep my mouth shut about anything of substance. Okey dokey then. Sorry about the sad experiences you must have had to have garnered all that superior knowledge. It must have been hard on you. My condolences.

I'm not talking about the "slings and arrows" of life. I'm talking about someone punching you literally in the face while you are trying to be nice to them. If you had this experience, you wouldn't have this vague, theoretical idea of a bully. You would have a visceral reality.

These republicans would happily see you dead for an extra dollar. You can't change their mind by taking the high road. I respect your niceness. Whining about how nobody understands you is irrelevant. Now get out of the way and let the fighters preserve your highmindedness--it will be helpful later.

I want to see him improve and take the prize because of that, and because of our good (democratic) policy - not because a large group of people have blind faith in him. We've seen how that works out, all too well, over the past 8 years.

You know, for everyone who thinks this was some sort of "strategery"... it looks to me like he was making extemporaneous comments on recycled GOP policies and resorted to an old cliche'.

Who or what was he "demeaning"?

He's used the line before. So has McCain. So have a lot of people.

Now, yes, Sarah Palin at the GOP convention used the metaphor of a dog with lipstick in reference to herself. If there's a "ploy" going on, it was an invitation to call her a bitch, but I'll tell you something.... my best friend, aside from my wife, is a mixed breed bitch that we adopted after it was found abandoned and injured, and I would never insult my dog by comparison with this lying idiot from Alaska.

about him implying Palin at all. Or that is was some sort of strategy. He seemed more to be reacting. It was the sarcastic tone he has taken over the past few days that seemed out of place for a presidential nominee. It just bothered me. Usually sarcasm is a replacement for lack of something better to say - a kind of childish one up - a defense mechanism. Obama has plenty he could be talking about - all correct - all better then the republicans. We have it on all the issues. No sarcasm is needed.

67. I still don't see the sarcasm, or see it as a "reaction" to anything....

That clip is from a small part of a longer speech to that crowd. He wasn't "reacting", he was simply using a common shopworn cliche' in reference to re-packaging old Bush policies as McCain policies.

What is ironic about the situation is the GOP camp projecting their own sexism in their reaction.

But it is simply projection. There is no "there" there in the speech.

112. I'm a Democrat
The race is too close for comfort - and you think I should just go away? There are people on the fence who might be willing to jump off on the McPalin side over just such a comment. I guess that is part of my point. I've seen Obama fall into this mode (sarcastic, cocky, demeaning) a few times, and it just makes me cringe. I don't feel like I can defend him because, to me, it (and the comment) seems in poor taste and below him.

The lipstick saying is an old one, I know. It's been used before in politics. I know that too. You all can insult me all day but it still doesn't change the fact that it was done in poor taste. The timing, the reaction from the crowd - the pause before the punchline, and Obama's delight in it all spoke volumes. I expect taunting like that from men of lesser worth.

I'm waiting for a loud and clear answer to the BS ad about Kindergarten sex ed, and abortion rights, and animal rights, and the environmental crisis. We are on the right side of every issue. Palin wants to drag us back to the 1950's. Na na na na na politics won't help, imo.

The point is that McCain's economic policy is GWB's policy and that McCain is simply trying to SELL it differently. Thus the lipstick. The policy is the pig. The lipstick is the selling point.

There is no na na na na politics here. Obama is exactly RIGHT and he said it WELL. In addition, it exposed the RW attempts to create faux outrage and swiftboat with lies AGAIN.

35. Huh?
How is it bullying to point out that McCain's change message is just putting lipstick (change)on a pig (his policies and campaign)? What is bullying, is McCain's campaign crying sexism every time anyone asks a question about Palin, accusing Barack and Gov. Patterson of playing the race card, and implying that Barack is a pedophile. Now THAT'S bullying.

It's kind of hard to have a real debate about this.

It may be a sign of how some people will react who only see the phrase said out of context.

Maybe but I do think it will get some people to ask themselves whether McCain's plans are the same old flawed policies of GWB.

To each their own. I don't think there's anything close to bullying about it.

You'll say he shouldn't behave like them. I say it's important to show that he's willing to fight back with humor AND hard-hitting truths.

47. It's not sophomoric to call a spade a spade, my friend
It's a colloquialism. A forceful and hard hitting statement but far from gutter. Common perhaps but far, far from the gutter.

I'll be insanely pissed if Obama apologizes for what he said, he spoke truth. Truth that needed saying and no backstepping. If McCain is pissed let him cry like the spoiled, silver spoon, soulless, sell out, lying, small minded baby that he is proving to be.

The Viet Cong couldn't break him but the right wing of the Republican party and a hunger to be a greater man than his fathers snapped him to the core of his soul.

I'll pity him when he is no longer a threat to our nation and our future. It was the Republicans that took it out of a civil discourse on differing paths to a common goal and made it a war.

We will not sink to their level but we will forcefully call them out on their lies and as I said, call a spade a spade.

For three long decades at least, the GOP have engaged in the crassest name-calling and crudest character assassinations and grotesque position misrepresentations and outright LIES while Democrats play nice over and over again and LOSE MOST OF THE TIME!!

McCain can openly question Sen. Obama's patriotism and accuse him of intentionally harming America for selfish motives.

McCain can intentionally and treasonously put America and the whole world at risk for selfish partisan motives when he appoints a completely un-vetted, unqualified extremist loon as potential Commander in Chief of the strongest military power in the history of the world.

The McCain campaign can engage in the most outrageous and intentional campaign of lies, deceit and name-calling.

And we have so-called Democrats thinking Sen. Obama is playing too ruff!!

Sheesh!! the nutters who show up at this forum!

I wonder what they will say if Sen. Obama does actually go on the offensive?

in the saying he employed, it is, in a sense, a compliment to Governor Palin and a comment on the Republicans.

"Putting lipstick on a pig." Here we assume that the pig is the Republican party, as evidenced by all of their inane and destructive policies. Therefore, the lipstick - the attempt to dress those policies up and make them more palatable is their "change" - Palin. As such, Governor Palin is not the pig, but is the lipstick. Why people seem to miss this is beyond me.

Let us say it is an infelicitous statement at its worst, due to the what the media would do with this, the gender normally identified with the use of lipstick and yadda yadda yadda. Okay

Obama's apology: "Sorry you missed my point - She is the lipstick. Your policies are the pig."

The guy is no bully. I am assuming that your "democratic version of GWB" is hyperbole only intended to kick this thread off.

215. You're blaming the wrong person
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 08:52 AM by Raineyb
The reason the media went off is because their chosen candidate McLame decided to make a stink about it. That's what they do. That is what they've been doing. That's why we're in this stupid ass war, that's why we can't get some so-called Democrats to behave like Democrats and stop acting like Republican Lite, that's why the economy is in the shitter, that's why GWB managed to steal not one but two elections.

In light of all that, I'm not surprised that media would go off on such an asinine, idiotic, doltish, cretinous, moronic, imbecilic, dim-witted, stupid tangent based on faux outrage. I'm surprised that someone who claims to have been paying attention is 1. surprised at the media's usual cow-towing to the corporate candidate and Republican whining and 2. falling for the RW framing of the issue. McLame used that exact same phrase four time during this election cycle his damn self. Even some of the MSM is picking up on this and at least one of those times he directed it at Senator Clinton (which is not something anyone can accuse Obama of doing without lying). Was there outrage? Hell no, frankly it's an oft used phrase why would anyone make such a stink it's petty and small. Now it's less than 2 months until the election and McLame has NOTHING TO SAY ON THE ISSUES So what happens? McLame disingenuously cries sexism over the same phrase and all of a sudden it's a problem and now we have people who claim to be Democrats wringing their hands about it while repeating the RW meme about the use of language.

You are falling into exactly the trap that McLame wants you to fall into. I will not be following suit thank you very much.

I've been accused of being a lot of things, on occasion the accusation had been not been wrong, but being half-witted had never been one of those accusations that happened to be correct.

125. The Media, possibly. The people
less so. In fact, there is another thread that shows 64% to 35%, people don't feel Obama was over the top, and it is all part of the game. This is the link to the poll:

If anything, the Media loves this because without, they can't fill the airwaves. Seriously, I think your OP is dead wrong, but I am sorry that you are getting hammered. You've been here long enough to know the drill, though, and that everyone is wired right now.

If you are so concerned with 'sophomoric behavior' by the Obama campaign, I'd like to see you come up with anything other than this latest made up crock that got the McCain camp in a huff.

The McCain camp is projecting and they're even more upset because it blew up in their faces.

Here's a news flash for you: Reality will not be found on Rush Limbaugh's radio smear show.

The people who post here all love America. Some of them are even fighting in the illegal war in Iraq...not because they want to, but because that's the deal they made when they signed up. They never suspected an American president would abuse his power as this one has.

But I'm pretty sure that you, like most republicans, will just dismiss my post the way you've dismissed the feelings of at least half the country, including those who've been bullied away from the polls by you and your cronies.

So as you leave, take your lying presidential candidate and his skanky-ho vp pick with you. Ok? :)

My post was not an error, it was my opinion. I stand by it. I think Obama showed poor judgment in using the terminology he used. Otherwise, there would be no buzz about it - or Photoshopped pig pictures here on DU - or any discussion at all other than about the issue(s) for which he referred.

My only error was believing that we were open minded enough here to actually admit a mistake was made by our nominee. After all, he is human, and not perfect. It might be healthier for some to see that.

don't know why you are so concerned. If anything, it is hurting McCain more because of his (like your) overreaction. The low information voters that McCain wants to appeal to know exactly what the expression means, and the more fuss they make about it, the more that those voters start to question McCain.

134. Americans don't vote on the issues
If Americans decided on the issues, Obama would be beating the GOP in the polls 90-20.

However, if people voted on the issues, Al Gore would have won in a landslide and would be finishing his second term now.

Until you understand that, you're condemned to lose. The fastest way to lose the attention of an average American is to talk about the "issues."

Now, they may tell pollsters that they care about the issues, but they're lying.

149. Uh ... no

To sound like GWB there would have to be lies, innuendo, attacks on someones personal life, if your going to make that accusation I suggest you start paying attention. You, however, sound remarkably like the McCain campaign spokespeople so my respond to your opinion is the same as Obama's to them ...

Please, spare me the fake outrage.

Taking the high road does not mean to just lay down and take it while they kick you in the face. It does not mean you never say anything critical or negative about the other side. He was talking about McCain's policies being the same old tired policies of GWB. That IS an issue isn't it? If we wanted more of the same why would we be here?

Humor is not necessarily sophomoric (though it can be). Spouting off about a statement without bothering to check the context is though. And I wouldn't be using the MSM to back yourself up with when you obviously haven't been listening to them either ... THAT fake outrage was because the McCain camp said Obama was calling Palin a pig with that comment, which was blatantly untrue of course. And today they MSM is calling them on that.

Forgive me, but I trust Obama's judgment here over yours. I know its not nice to say something like this - but I can't help it. It's the truth.

162. I disagree: we need to learn how to feed the press...
I think Obama's lipstick on a pig line was masterful. It speaks to McCain's lies, it pokes fun at "Pitbull Palin", and it is a subliminal jab at all Palin's Pork. It also gives Obama a window of opportunity to remind people that McCain is no change candidate: the guy voted with Bush over 90% of the time. Democrats need to learn how to use so-called "controversial" statements and ads in order to give the press something to talk about. Of course we have to make sure these statements contain a message and are not just meaningless name-calling.

Lets see, as I understand it Senator Obama says "That's not change, that's just calling something the same thing something different. You know you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig." in reference to mcsame’s policy being similar to *’s.

Mcsame, apparently only paying attention enough to hear the phrase "lipstick on a pig", automatically thinks of his running mate? Hmm... hopefully his Acme"outraginess" kit will go Wile E. Coyote on him.

207. Obviously not reality. But what passes for reality in
the forum that cannot be mentioned is quite different from "real" reality, don't you think?

180. What in God's name are you talking about? "Bully line"? There's no bullying here.
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 03:11 PM by calmblueocean
A "bully line" is when you say your opponent thinks Kindergarten should be a Sex Ed class.

This is just a straightforward American idiom, and it's not directed against McCain or Palin, but their policies.

Frankly, the reason your views aren't popular is because they are delusional.

Saying Obama is acting like GWB???? And if you read her responses throughout the thread it's obvious that the point was to disrupt.
