It's unfortunate Rick Warren's question to Obama is continually misquoted
Just heard it again on Meet the Press. Rick Warren did not ask Obama "When does life begin?" He asked him "When does a baby have human rights?" That is the question to which Obama answered it's above his pay scale. That is a more complicated question than "When does life begin?" It involves personhood rather than life in strictly biological terms.

1. And I wish someone would point out that it's NOT A SIMPLE QUESTION ...

The question of when human life begins -- and when a
human being ostensibly becomes defendable in terms
of legal rights -- is VERY COMPLEX and VERY PERSONAL.
It's painted in terms of black and white when it's
really somewhere in a VERY gray area.

BTW, what to Jews and Muslims believe? Why does
this always have to come down to Catholics and
fundies versus more mainstream Christians???

3. Obama and Biden have. See this from AP today:
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics/AP/story/676034.html

Obama:

"'...I have a lot of humility about understanding when does the soul enter into ... It's a pretty tough question.

And so, all I meant to communicate was that I don't presume to be able to answer these kinds of theological questions,' he said in an interview broadcast Sunday on ABC's "This Week.""

Biden:

"'I'm prepared as a matter of faith to accept that life begins at the moment of conception. But that is my judgment,' Biden said on NBC's "Meet the Press." 'For me to impose that judgment on everyone else who is equally and maybe even more devout than I am seems to me is inappropriate in a pluralistic society.'"

I love these men.

2. "At what point does a baby get human rights?" was a rigged question, IMO. Baby versus fetus should
have been defined first, IMO.

If you REALLY want to see the glaring differences, go to GodTubeSaddlebackExclusiveVideoThey have the question listed on the LH column, and in the RH columns you can click on McCain or Obama and see their responses to each question.

In addition, each question and each response is a separate clip.

Rick slipped in TWO questions on this topic:

"At what point does a baby get human rights?" Clip of Rick's question & Barrack's answer)

"Have you ever voted against or to limit abortions?" (not sure if I quoted that correctly)

4. My stock answer when wing-nuts try to get me...
"Mother Nature/God has made conception of humans very
complicated. EVen in nature, there are times when
nature decides the child isn't viable, and the
woman has what's called a 'spontaneous abortion' known
to most of us as a miscarriage. NO women is every charged
with murder when her body decides the pregnancy is not
going to continue. A baby is a viable human being
when it can survive outside the womb. Ancient theolgians
said when the baby 'quickened,' (moved) it had a soul.
When a child, early or full term, can breathe and
take nourishment on its own (or with sensible medical assistance),
without dependance on it's mother, it is a human being."

But that's just me.

Obama made a thoughtful answer that was excellent,
but then, I appreciate nuance. And in a kind of way, he's also
a theologian. But that doesn't get simple minded votes.
