Here's a thing that pisses me off....when I look for a job in my field,
I have to have eight--yes, EIGHT--written references; three phone references; fill out this big ol' form that includes, among other things, statements that I've never been professionally disciplined or legally convicted of a crime; a background check, including criminal and financial records; and all of this is vetted and confirmed by my judicatory office. I get the feeling that's MORE than the Repug VP nominee was subjected to.

So, she couldn't pastor my church, but she can be Vice President?!! :banghead:

3. Just a local parish pastor.
I think I have my Roman Catholic colleagues to thank for the pain in the ass our search process has become. If there's a skeleton anywhere, it'll be found.

6. Judicatory is the regional executive office...in my denomination we call it
the Association. Others use terms like "district", "presbytery", "diocese". "Judicatory" is the catchall word for such things.

5. I had to undergo a criminal background check for my last job
and fill out a HUGH form with such questions as "Have you ever been convicted of sedition?"

7. Wow. We aren't asked about sedition. In fact, our form says that we don't have to list
arrests or convictions gotten as the result of public demonstrations.

8. Do you have these things on your resume?
Point Guard in High School
Miss Congeniality

That could be why you are not given the job after the phone interview.

:sarcasm:

10. LOL!! I did forget to mention that I was captain of the Scholastic Bowl team
two years in a row. I should be more thorough, I guess.

13. The only two other candidates that I can remember it being mentioned are
Bill Bradly and Gerald Ford. But they were more than small high school athletics.

a credit check, a health exam and a drug test. The pre-employment work up took 30 days.

12. You were taken. If you had applied for VP, they don't even start the background checks
until after they've offered you the job!

11. Here's a odd realization.
Ignoring the fact that he was a different faith (which is important in reality, but not for the point I'm about to make.), Martin Luther King Jr. (or Daniel Berrigan or almost any other important 20th c. activist religious figure) couldn't be the pastor of your congregation either.

14. We don't have to list convictions for demonstrations.
I don't know what churches do when they show up in the background check, but we don't have to list 'em on our forms. But yes, we've become so frightened of liability crap that there are good people being kept out of the field. I have a good friend who was a brilliant student in seminary, but has a DUI from college on his record. He won't even float his resume. Has a non-ordained job and isn't really using his degrees. I think the pendulum will swing the other way in time.

Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 06:03 PM by DesertRat
and had to take a TB test. I had to submit three written references plus two phone references, and a detailed interview in front of a panel of people. I also had to take an oath of allegiance to the U.S. I'm a public school teacher.

Plus, of course, I had to provide and maintain a valid state teaching certificate.

17. Also, for 40 years I've lived in a state that borders Mexico
So I have plenty of foreign policy experience. I have 3 kids and was a "baseball mom". I should have been considered for vp. :)
