smearing the sign poles with Vaseline, making it harder for them to be removed. It would be interesting if you could add some sort of dye to the mixture so the culprits could be identified.

Campaign signs touting Democrats generally have a short life cycle here in NC too. We lost 2 Kerry signs in the last election each only having lasted one day. We decided not to upset the neighbors this year with an Obama sign, but your comment got me thinking that maybe we might just put one up after all...with the vaseline mixed with some powdered RIT dye, black of course.

And here is what stopped them. My father, a union printer, had some of that press-ink (the kind that has the consistency of bearing grease). He began painting it on the backs of his yard signs. When the first one's were in place, we waited and watched. After a few hours, a mercedes came to a stop, a guy in a brown leather jacket jumped out, grabbed the sign and immediately dropped it as the ink stuck to his fingers. Almost instinctively, he wiped all that ink on his expensive leather jacket...and then jumped in the car and drove quickly away.

He didn't lose any more signs that year.

Printer's ink, bearing grease, hell - even vaseline: I approve of this message.

Republicans are such thieves? Say they are trespassing and stealing and in your mind it is indicative of the "family values" taught in their households. Maybe then the local RNC will put out notices not to steal signs if it's making them look bad...
