It is being reported that Palin's water broke with her most recent child, Trig Paxson Van Palin, at a meeting in Texas. She then made a speech, climbed on a plane and flew back to Alaska while in labor. Was that a rational decision? Did she put the well-being of her child at risk?
That child has Down syndrome. God Bless Him.
I am the grandmother of a child with Down syndrome who has had relatively good health. Some, if not most, children with Down syndrome have serious medical problems. Even if their health is good, they require a lot of attention. They require physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy on a reqular schedule. If their health is not good, they may face multiple surgeries and constant attention. I fail to understand how Palin could possibly put her political career and the demands of a national campaign before the needs of that child. Is that pro-life? I don't think so. And if she is delegating that responsibility to someone else, what kind of parent is that?
My grandson has had the attention he deserved and is well-developed and progressing nicely. However, at age 5 he was recently diagnosed with tracheal stenosis, which is not allowing enough oxygen through his trachea to support his lungs and heart. He is now facing life threatening surgery to correct this problem.
So, Palin cannot know what kind of challenges lie ahead for her son. Does she not care?
