McCain: 'Convention Night'

In an ad that is possibly a smidgen less historic, thrilling, and unusual than advertised, and which will air during the convention, McCain congratulates Obama on a "job well done" and generally associates himself with the day's good will.

Both candidates used to have reputations for high-minded aversion to slash-and-burn politics. A summer of partisan sparring has left Obama's damaged and McCain's pretty much gone, but that's a high-ground that matters to some of the independent voters they're trying to court, and one both candidates are striving to reclaim.

It's a way for McCain to get in on the action and look classy...and now if Obama bashes him in his speech he might look petty. Obama should do the same thing next week when McCain gives his speech.

Someone over there had a moment of sanity, but I don't expect it to last. Unfortunately, it gave him the opportunity to tap into Obama's news cycle.
