Do you appreciate HRC enough to help?
Edited on Tue Aug-26-08 11:32 PM by Spiffarino
I'm a proud Obama supporter who was utterly blown away tonight. There is no doubt Hillary did the job and did it well. But what she did went way beyond what was needed. It wasn't just a "home run" or the "speech of the Convention."

Hillary Clinton may have just single-handedly made the Presidency of the United States Barack Obama's to lose.

A poster in another forum made a great suggestion on how to reward her, and I took him up on it. I just sent a few bucks toward retiring her campaign debt. And it felt really good.

If you can swing it in this horrible Bush/McCain economy, please show Hillary Clinton some love for bringing something to the Democratic party it hasn't had in 12 years:

UNITY!

in person, but I sent what I could. Hope everybody else does too.

She deserves some help from us. A few bucks from a lot of people will go a long way, as Obama has demonstrated.

3. I do
I have always been an Obama supporter but tonight a bit of my heart belongs to Hillary too. I donated to her as soon as I saw her speech. I think and hope that in the morning we are all one big happy democratic party.

I sent a couple extra for you...about twice what I donated to Obama this month. :D:thumbsup:

Of course, when it's all contributed Barack will come out ahead, but Hill's gonna get hers in 2016.

without fearing that I'll get fired from my job by writing my employer information. I'm afraid they will find out I donated to a Democrat and fire me for "under performance." I haven't donated to Obama's campaign since I graduated college in May.

But it wouldn't do any good and would probably only count as snark. And that is something that should be in very short supply after her stirring endorsement of the Democratic ticket.

but I was just directly responding to your comment about the employment thing. Anyway, I think I'm going to give it a shot both on Hillary's site and Obama's. Hopefully I won't get in trouble. I've only given $25 to a politician in my life and that was Obama earlier this year. I'll give $25 to her tonight and if Bill can jump on board and become a strong surrogate of us, I will make another donation. I want to give around $50 to Obama but I think I might wait a while for when it's closer to the election and I can have a bigger impact.

Your contribution is your personal business, unless you are employed by a lobbyist I don't think there is a problem in contributing.

How is it that your employer would find out, do you think?

54. I went through this too
I work at a labor union that was neutral in the primaries, so when I donated to Obama I just put "Labor Organization" as my employer. I doubt your employer actually searches FEC data by name to see who you are giving to, so you should be safe if you don't put the name of the employer. Plus, I believe it would be illegal for them to fire you for donating to a political candidate. Isn't that covered by freedom of association in the 1st amendment?

40. She had until the convention to re-pay herself
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 11:11 AM by REACTIVATED IN CT
From NPR's site

The 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, however, pushes her the other way — setting no deadline for paying creditors but giving her only until the August convention to repay herself. After that, all but $250,000 of her $11.4 million in loans would automatically be converted into unrecoverable campaign contributions. The Millionaires Amendment in McCain-Feingold sets that deadline to prevent self-financing candidates from collecting and pocketing contributions years after their campaigns have folded.

Edited because I had misrememberd what I heard

23. I'm waiting for Bill ...
As I wrote to them (and I'm just OH so sure that they read it ... not) ... I'll be happy to send $1K to help her pay off her debt IF both she and Bill demonstrate - in ways I can see, not through spokespeople and/or written statements, that they're behind Obama/the Democratic Ticket this week.

FIRST - I thought her speech was TERRIFIC.

SECOND - I'm confused. Is it really MSM (including MSNBC, as well as at least some of the blogs) "blowing" things out of porportion -- or is there "off camera" real bad stuff going on? (See, e.g., http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/27/opinion/27dowd.html -- I mean, Maureen's nonlove of the Clintons has been plain to see. But this column isn't JUST anti-Clinton .. it's anti-Democratic Convention. How TRUE is it? Making me crazy).

That being said, again, I thought her speech was great, and ... will be sending something to her just for that.

Bill still has to earn his, tho. Sorry.

53. Couldn't disagree more
Helping clear her campaign debt will send her a powerful message: Obama's supporters will take care of you if you take care of them.

Whether some like it or not, we need the support of the Clintons if Obama is to become the next president. Right now her supporters are soft on Obama. We need them to come home and the Clintons can help make that happen.

Make no mistake, the Clintons will do the right thing. But I want them to not only do what's right, I want them to do it with enthusiasm. If she knows we have her back, it will motivate her even more.

So you're in the same boat as most Americans? Then do what you gotta do.

The whole purpose of this thread isn't to shame anybody into doing anything. Some give because they can. Others can't give but take action instead. Either way, it makes all the difference.

Or for those who can afford it.

I can only afford one more $100 gift to Obama- I also give small increments to the DNC weekly.

For those who can afford to help Hillary and who are maxed out as to Obama, I say go for it.

Edited on Thu Aug-28-08 01:19 PM by MathGuy
http://articles.latimes.com/2008/apr/05/nation/na-taxes5

I truly appreciate Hillary, and I loved her speech, but why can't she pay off her own campaign debt? It does not feel quite right that people living paycheck to paycheck send money to Hillary that could be going to Obama, when Bill earns $125,000 per speech. Is there some campaign finance regulation coming into play here?
