McCain and the DRAFT
Do you think that McCain's hawkish stance on international
policy will result in the reinstitution of the DRAFT? How many
military fronts can the US undertake before we run out of
young American bodies to fill the troop boots?

1. I do think he'd head that way IF he happen to win..
.
.

It would be political suicide to bring it up before the election.

I just hope the Bush-lovin' A-hole doesn't win!

2. I'm still waiting for someone to dig up McCain's pro-draft Op-Ed article...

When he was whining about the fact that the New York Times didn't publish his anti-Obama rant, it was mentioned that McCain wrote a pro-draft editorial for the Arizona papers during the Cold War.

Given his recent "I agree with you on all points" reply to the woman who said she could not see how we could achieve our goals in Iraq and Afghanistan without implementing the draft, I don't understand why nobody has found that article he wrote and publicized it.

3. Republicans don't want the draft back
Edited on Mon Aug-25-08 03:44 AM by goodgd_yall
Contrary to what some paranoid Democrats think. They see the draft as one of the reasons the U.S. failed in Vietnam. If men and women are forced to serve in some U.S. travesty like Iraq, many will, from the start, oppose the reasoning behind the war (or invasion) and they will make their feelings and opinions known. Not to mention, when a larger number of Americans have their lives affected by the next American military adventure, opposition and discord like that in the 60s and early 70s will be the result. The Republicans figure it's better to get people who are attracted to military life in the first place, or who are too poor and uneducated to have many options (they'll be more invested in not rocking the boat).

6. You forget that the Democrats weren't the party in office for most of the Vietnam War
And weren't the ones who started it even. Why would they care about what didn't and did work back then. They don't seem to care about what does and does work nowdays.

7. Actually I believe
that President Johnson had a democratically controlled Congress from 1963 though 1968. Nixon took office in 1969, but controll of Congress remained in hands of the Democratic party. When Kennedy took office in 1961 there were 300 American Advisors in Vietnam. In Dec 1964 that number had grown to 16,000. After the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in August 1964 the numbers eventually reached 500,000. President Johnson and Secretary of Defense McNamara decide that the draft would be used to fight the war in Vietnam instead of calling up the Guard and Reserves. From Jan 63 through Dec 1968, 38,000 Americans were killed in Viet Nam.

9. No, I really believe
it is part of the neocon strategy to have a volunteer armed forces. This lessens the likelihood of discord within the services and more vocal and active opposition to war and any other military force used to forward U.S. interests.
