Because then it will be VERY early AM. Not noon just before the appearance. Not 9PM after the news cycle.

Obama's either going to take advantage of the evening news, or wait do it in the early AM well before the joint appearance.

If he's doing it tonight, he would do it before the 6:30EDT evening newscast to take advantage. That leaves us about an hour and a half.

Otherwise... go out and drink, go to bed, watch a good movie. He's going to wait until the very early AM. But not TOO late. He has to do it early. That way, no one is tipped off by, say, Biden or Chet Edwards getting on a flight for Illinois at 6AM.

My guess is 5:30AM Saturday. Then it doesn't matter if the CNN vultures are waiting outside of soon-to-be V.P.-elect "INSERT NAME HERE"'s door, if they see he/she leaving at an ungodly hour, or if they then follow them to the airport.

1. What if he doesn't announce at all but just unveils his running mate on stage?
Miss America style? Everybody in the country will be glued to the TV or internet feeds. We'll all listen to what Obama has to say. That would be brilliant.

4. That wouldn't be a good move.

The thought behind a text message to his supporters is to make us all feel important. We will know before anyone else. Can't blow us off.

9. Zillions of text message receiving supporters vying to be the first to hear?
I don't see that as a major perk. He will fulfill his promise to me if he gets elected. I couldn't care less if I'm the first to hear something or not.

5. But CNN is already waiting at the front doors of all the prospective candidates (5 or 6 I think).
They are going to watch them all like hawks. Should any one of them head to Springfield, it'll be a dead giveaway.

(unless they're all going already; don't know about that)

2. I think he should wait until his speech in Chicago.
The media would be going nuts.

Send the text and give it a few moments for the people in the crowd to digest it, start screaming/chanting, then just appear on stage together. Dramatic.

3. Remember Hawaii
At 5:30 tomorrow morning, it'll be 11:30 PM there. Would he make the announcement anyway? I doubt it. I'm thinking around 3:00 tomorrow afternoon.

7. All this hype...for Biden? Plus, now that everyone is saying it's Biden will anyone be shocked when
his name pops up in the text message?

12. I don't mean it that way. My point is, after hearing pundits talking about Biden all day it will not
be shocking to see his name in the text message.

13. But they're so "sure", they're staking out several houses, and still discussing darkhorses.
Although I think Chet Edwards may be a last-minute feint leaked by the Obama campaign to distract from Biden.

They are strictly guessing right up to what, in political circles, is the very last second. Meanwhile, Time magazine reported this morning that (for McCain) "It's Mitt!". So much for August 29th.
