McCain can't do better than 40% in new poll of his home state
A telephone poll of registered voters in Arizona showed 40 percent favor McCain, 30 percent support Obama and 2 percent back independent Ralph Nader. Less than 1 percent said they would vote for Libertarian candidate Bob Barr. Twenty-eight percent were undecided, which is unusually high for this time of year, said Arizona State University pollster Bruce Merrill. The poll, conducted over the weekend, had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

Merrill attributes the large percentage of undecided voters to the long, divisive primary season on the Democratic side and the fact that neither of the main parties has held its conventions. The Democratic National Convention begins Monday, and the Republican National Convention starts Sept. 1.

Tara Blanc, associate director of the Cronkite/Eight poll, said Obama draws younger, highly educated voters, who tend to be more independent in their thinking.

"Obama will most likely benefit from a higher turnout," Blanc said. "Whether that's enough for him to win Arizona, probably not. But it could impact the percent by which McCain would carry Arizona."

1. Obama should invest money and open offices there.
Will he win it? Probably not. But it would ENRAGE McCain and get him off-message.

2. As a Zonie, I disagree. He should plan a major appearance here
with plenty of advance notice so that people can be bused to it from the Navajo and Hopi reservations (major Dem strongholds), Flagstaff, Yuma, Tucson, and Nogales, etc (all also Dem strongholds).

The turnout alone would put McCain to shame and the pres coverage would be mostly positive.

But those resources are better spent where the EV is possible. I'd love to believe it can happen here, but the pmedia and the old-boy network will see to it that it won't.

Racism is also an ugly reality in the rural part of the state; it's shameful, but ssdly true.

4. Absolutely. Kerry did an unplanned whistle-stop in Flagstaff in 2004
on his way to the Navajo and Hopi reservations--and over 10,000 people showed up.

There was a couple of days advance notice and no guarantee he would show but the train had to pass through Flagstaff.

It was SPECTACULAR. Kudos to the Coconino County Democrats; they took a minor appearance and made it into a real event with bands, speakers--and it really boosted some local races.
