Putting the Faith Forum in a realistic Prospective
Alot of us watched it because it was Political theatre and we are Political junkies. Relgious conservatives may have watched it because they love Rick Warren. Other than that the event was scheduled perfectly for Obama. It was 2 hours long during the Olympics. What the Obama team now has is Obama sitting on a stage with a prominent Christian Pastor talking about his Christianity and it can be cut and spliced to all the nice videos they need to, to counter act the muslim bullshit and the Revrend Wright nonsense. There were no Gaffes and no soundbites that can be taken out of context to make him look un-Christian.

What did McCain get out of the event. He got to sit there and give his same stump speech to his base. He wasn't energizing or exciting and these people are going to vote for him anyway. I didn't see anything on there that would have made the base more excited to vote for him. Despite what we may think these people aren't stupid and they still don't trust McCain. Alot are very well educated about how his intraparty fighting against their influence since the John Tower incident and no matter what he says and whose ring he kisses they remember. That translates to people who will vote for you but won't be doing much else. Obama didn't come off as the liberal anti-christ or scary man. Fundies who are voting but not donating en masse and volunteering their hearts out essentially a quiet base. That's good for us.

What did people expect that Obama would visit the Fundies and they'd all see the light and come to our side. That wasn't the goal of an event like this. That group still is anti-choice, pro-war, anti-science, and anti-gay rights and Jesus himself couldn't convince them otherwise. This group it isn't about Christianity but their own twisted morality. They find in the bible what they want to find and take verses out of context to justify their twisted world view. In Jesus's time they were called Pharisees.

Tonight Michael Phelps raced for his 8th Gold Medal of the Games. Dana Torres at 41 raced for a Silver Medal. What do you think people were watching the Faith Forum or Michael Phelps an Dana Torres. What is going to be the conversation tommorow in America. Obama and McCain at Saddleback or Michael Phelps best olympian ever or the oldest American to ever win a medal in swimming.

This week Obama will most likely name his VP. Any discussion of Saddleback will be gone by Tuesday.

So the sky is not falling. Obama does not need to become a 3 second Soundbite machine and the Election was not won or lost at Saddleback church tonight.

4. I think what is giving some people pause ...
is not Obama's fine performance, but the fact that John McCain can be razor sharp, funny, and connect with people even when regurgitating talking points by rote.

His answers clearly did not have the depth or sincerity of Obama's, but he made people laugh and told stories. He very well may have had access to the questions beforehand but this shows that when he is scripted, he can perform.

Obama needs to develop a bit more of this stagecraft and mix it into his message.

But the debates will be totally different. No cheating. Just hard questions on the spot like Obama got tonight.
