Dear X

Barack Obama is about to make one of the most important decisions of this campaign -- choosing a running mate.

You have helped build this movement from the bottom up, and Barack wants you to be the first to know his choice.

2. Well of course he's "about" to pick a VP. There isn't much time left.
Edited on Sun Aug-10-08 05:12 PM by jesus_of_suburbia
I don't think there will be an announcement till the convention.

WE don't have long to wait AT ALL!

If it's not Hillary, he certainly won't announce it before the convention, because that's all the media would talk about.

61. I'm thinking that's Obama's way of bringing Clinton supporters into the fold.
What better way to say there's no hard feelings between the Clintons and Obama than to have Bill introduce the VP selection. It's as though he's saying, "I approve of the VP choice even though it's not Hillary."

4. You present a good argument --
if it is not Hillary and he were to announce prior to the convention, that's what all the media would be all over.

So, if Hillary's speaking the second day, and Bill is speaking the third -- which I read is traditionally the day the VP gives a speech, when in that time frame do you think they'd announce? How would that be handled?

When Bill is through, does Obama take the stage and say And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd like to introduce my running mate...."?

I'm unfamiliar with the machinations of the convention. Thanks!!

15. then you should be hoping it's Hillary
since polls show she helps, not hurts, Obama in his quest to win the Presidency.

"In late June, polls conducted by The Wall Street Journal/NBC and Fox/Opinion Dynamics -- using entirely different samples -- both showed Sen. Clinton giving Sen. Obama a +3% bump, pushing him over 51% for the first time, when the two of them were paired against Sen. McCain and Gov. Romney.

Most recently, in nationwide polling on July 22-23, a Fox/Opinion Dynamics poll showed a more dramatic bump of +8% with Sen. Clinton as Sen. Obama's vice presidential running mate. In a head-on match, it was Sen. Obama 41% to Sen. McCain's 40% (this was before the intense media coverage of his European trip). But with exactly the same sample, when all voters were presented with the choice of an Obama-Clinton ticket vs. McCain-Romney, the results were Obama-Clinton, 48% (+7%), and McCain-Romney 39% (-1%). "

And, they are just polls.

She and Bill have not been vetted, it's too dangerous, what polls show now cannot be applied to what would in fact happen.

Not going to happen.

34. are you sure about that?
"*Sen. Clinton is polarizing and will rev up the Republican base.

In fact, the data proves the reverse is true: Sen. Clinton has little or no effect on Republican preferences in a race against Sen. McCain -- and she helps Sen. Obama significantly among Democrats.

According to the July 22-23 Fox/Opinion Dynamics poll, in an Obama-McCain head-on match-up, Sen. Obama gets just 74% of the Democrats and 6% of the Republicans. With Sen. Clinton as his running mate vs. a McCain-Romney ticket, Sen. Obama's Democratic vote goes up to 86%--a significant 12% increase. As for Republican voters, rather than getting "revved up" because of Hillary's presence on the ticket, there was no effect at all: The Obama-Clinton ticket gains 3% (from 6% to 9% among Republicans), whereas McCain-Romney gains the same 3% (from 82% to 85%).

So what about independents? An Obama-Clinton ticket appears to gain some strength in this critical swing-voter group. With an Obama-McCain head-on contest, independents are evenly divided, 32%-30%, with Sen. Obama over Sen. McCain. But with an Obama-Clinton ticket vs. a McCain-Romney ticket, the independents favor Obama-Clinton 38%-30%--a statistically significant 6% increase in a crucial voter group. "

108. from your article
"For now, there is no definitive answer whether Clinton would help or hurt Democrats. Gallup and CNN polls last week showed the Democratic ticket doing slightly better against McCain with Clinton on Obama's ticket than when Obama and McCain were paired without running mates."

What's the point of the Zogby poll?

Am I supposed top take a poll that concludes that Colin Powell should be Obama's running mate seriously?

As for your gratuitous insults, while I realize it's a staple of your posting style, when you make a claim wouldn't it be reasonable to back that claim up with some hard evidence? It's not a matter of me "doing my own research". You're the one who made the claim, it's your job to back it up.

Obama winning the primaries is the best thing that could have happened to us. It's not what the republicans expected, and it's not what they (McCain included) were prepared for. With Hillary, they had a well laid out, easy to execute plan. Barack blind-sided them. I realize we're democrats, but let's try not to fuck this good thing up.

I'm not just talking about this comment, there seems to be a general assumption on DU that "it'll be a surprise" is the number 1 qualification in a running mate. I mean, Bernie Mac would be a surprise with him being a) a comedian and b) dead, but that doean't mean to say he'd be the best choice of VP candidate.

. . . yup. I signed up imemdiately. Heck, I think I'll be a nerd and sign up for the text message notification too. :applause:

I think it will be Hillary. And the win will be sealed. The Rethuglicans will be just as demoralized as half of DU.

Seriously, though - - Kaine was just a headfake and a nod to Virginia voters confirming that Obama is taking them seriously. I think Bayh (who expected to be picked himself last Wednesday) was the same deal, for Indiana. I think Biden, Richardson or Clark would all being strengths, but Hillary is far and away the best choice. And folks . . . the convention speaking arrangements can be changed on a moment's notice. This guy and his campaign know how to run big-media events, remember? :-)

39. The only possible reason he'd do it is to appease the PUMA crowd.
But they're such a small and irrational group of racists that I don't think he'd bother.

53. Please don't pull the race card. Our candidate doesn't. It makes you look very desperate.
Hillary has more fans than the PUMA idiots. I'm one.

Obama has my vote no matter what, but I'd be elated if he chooses Clinton.

And I think there are 18 million people who would be so happy to see Hillary as VP that aren't racist.

Again, please don't pull the race card. Our candidate doesn't. It makes you look very desperate.

56. The PUMA folks are racists...
Since he was refering to the PUMAs I see no problem with him calling it like it is. He wasn't speaking about all Hillary supporters, just the PUMAs. Its really quite clear.

Thankfully most Clinton supporters are not PUMAs.

But I will not apologize for calling a spade a spade, nor should you expect me to.

Then imagine the phrase "I'm John McCain and I approve this message" at the end.

The race will be over.

That's . . . almost childishly simplistic. One ad, directed against the VICE-PRESIDENTIAL nominee, is going to make the race "be over"? Um, I really, really doubt it.

Honestly, I believe the main stream media is perpetually "HACKED" at Obama because he's a non-conformist to their (i.e., MSM's) protocol and establishment ....

I see MSNBC is saying this "email" thing to announce his Vice Presidency is somewhat "strange" ...

Ha, there just pissed because he's going straight to the American people who are supporting him first, and the media doesn't get to break any stories.
